Hi there, My name is Jen Simons and I will be in my second trimester on the 19th or somewhere near there. My doctor just did a test to see if I had strep and if I am a carrier of strep. Possibility of taking out my tonsils. Will my doctor have me get them taken out while I'm pregnant, or will he wait till after the baby arrives?

Re: Surgery while pregnant?
So, this is clearly a question for your doctor and obgyn but, I am a NP and feel like throwing my two cents/opinion out there .
First off, I hope you are seeing an ENT or OMFS doctor regarding your tonsils. Tonsilectomy in adults is much riskier than in children.
If you have frequent strep throat infections, or issues with your tonsils such as abscess, etc, then yes, it would be an option to have them removed.
Personally, I would not be having a tonsilectomy unless I had angry, inflammed, abscessed tonsils that do not respond to antibiotics. I get strep throat every year and still have mine and intend to keep them.
As for taking them out while pregnant, it would be a risk/benefit situation. If the benefit was greater than potentially harming the baby with anesthesia, pain medications and your possible blood loss, they may do it.
Otherwise, if you could, I would wait till the baby was born and I would get a second opinion if you really need them out.
I hope everything turns out okay.
Edit: (Just read your second post. Ask both docs and see what they think. I hope it works out and you do not need surgery now. Good luck.)
This is definitely a question for your docs.
I will say that I had surgery when I was 25 wks with #1. There were some modifications- like keeping me awake- but I have a healthy 2 yo so it can be done. My OB did say that 2nd tri was the best time to have surgery.
