Parenting after 35

So Hysterectomy came up w/ my Dr today...

and I'm not even 38 yet!  I'm FREAKING OUT a bit!

So I'm probably going to have my 2nd LEEP procedure in January and my Dr basically told me that if it happens again I can't have a 3rd LEEP that the next step is a Hysterectomy.

She told me about the da Vinci Hysterectomy that's done with robots with 4 small incisions on your stomach and that everything is pulled out through your vagina.

I'm freaking about how this will change my life afterwards, how my sex life will suffer, how many hormones am I  going to have to take, and how ugly will those scars actually be?

I freak easily and this is something that probably won't happen for a few years but it depends on my body and if I have dysplasia again on my cervix. But realistically, we're talking a hysterectomy by the time I'm 45 years old or sooner.

Have you had one?

Has a relative or friend had one?

Share your experience or your friends' because I'd really like to know what my future holds if this does happen.

I'm really scared!Crying

  • OMG! I have no advice but I'm sorry.

Although it's not a forgone conclusion yet, so hopefully you won't need one.

  • I'm so sorry!  I think you're entitled to a little freak out, but hopefully, it will pass soon.  A co-worker was in what sounds like a similar situation  but younger than you.  She ended up having the hysterectomy and was actually much happier and was surprised at how unaffected she was physically.  Good Luck!
  • My family has a history of fibroids. My OB was shocked that I haven't had any issues with heavy bleeding or cramps during my periods. I have several very large ones. He told me (while I was pregnant) that I WILL need a hysterectomy some day. Lucky me.

My Mom had one about twenty years ago. My sister (who is 42) just had one about three months ago. She did not have the da Vinci version. I *think* it was because she never had children? For some reason, she HAD to have the full inscision (sort of like a c-section). She still did pretty good with her recovery. I think it might have been a little rougher on her than my c-section was on me. But still, she is completely fine now.

I must admit that I don't know what a LEEP procedure is, so I don't know what your issues are, but in A LOT of cases, you can keep your ovaries. That is what my sister did and she doesn't have to take any horomones. Then again, she also gets her period :(

Try not to stress too much. I hope you won't need one, but if you do, it sounds like the procedure isn't too hard on your body. I'm sure those incisions are relatively small too.

  • Depending on why you are getting a hysterectomy, they will sometimes leave the ovaries and/or cervix.

    Lap surgeries are pretty awesome.

My BFF had a hysterectomy and has loved it. I asked her if she still had her surgery (we were talking about PAPs) ans she didn't know so she asked at her next gyno appointment and she didn't  - so obviously - it wasn't an issue for her.

I had another very close friend who begged for one for years due to very, very heavy and nearly constant bleeding and finally was given one (it was maddening to see her struggle to get help when he DH walked into the doc and walked out with a vasectomy, practically no questions asked, but that is another rant). She did have to have the traditional surgery, but the surgeon gave her a mini tummy tuck and "cleaned things up a bit for her". BONUS! :) She has been SOOOOO happy.

  • I just had my 2nd LEEP last week and I am scared of the same thing, I have been dealing with dysplasia on and off for what seems like 15 years. My only normal pap was right after having F. We are about to start TTC #2 once I'm cleared in my follow up post LEEP and am scared of my cervix being compromised because of all this......
  • The need for the LEEP is because of dysplasia on my cervix so keeping it would be defeating the point. I'll most likely need to get rid of it one day and I don't think you can have a uterus and NOT have a cervix, thus the hysterectomy. But I'll have to do some research.

Ok, I feel a little better reading some other people's experiences not impacting their lives so much. I'd still love to hear more though because I'm pretty sure this is going to keep me up for a week.

  • No stories/experience, but I am sorry you have to go through all this...
