PNV ? and updates - edited

I had another appointment with my lady doctor this morning regarding my non-existent AF.  After a second round of progesterone, a pelvic ultrasound, and an MRI she has diagnosed me with polycystic ovarian syndrome.  She seems to think that my egg doesn't make it along very far at all at the beginning stage of ovulation.  My estrogen production is on the lower end of the normal scale, but my cervical lining is only 2mm...women who are going through menopause are around 3mm, so I'm very low.

So my question is: since we are planning to TTC in the next few months she gave me a prescription for citranatal plus DHA prenatal.  Is it worth to get the prescription or should I just buy over the counter PNVs?

Since we aren't TTC we are going to basically do nothing for my lack of AF.  When we're ready if I still haven't had my period she is going to start me on Clomid and we'll go from there.  I was only able to talk to DH briefly this morning about all this again, but our initial conversation was that we're going to wait until after our vacation to Seattle at the end of January to get things going.  So I will probably make an appointment to go see my doctor again mid/late February.

ETA: I just went to drop off the prescription and it was going to cost me $50 for a 30 day supply!  Good golly...OTC it is!  I bought the Women's One-A-Day kind.

  • I personally don't think the prescription PNVs are necessary and I always just took the GNC brand.

ETA: I'm glad that you were proactive in meeting with your OB and having tests done so at least now you know prior to TTC that you have a course of action lined up.

  • I like my prescription ones (Prenate-DHA) because the other ones make me constipated (yeah I know TMI).

About the PCOS and the Clomid, don't worry too much about it. I like that your doctor is bing proactive and she is really concern. Once we get closer to the date you want to start lets talk more in detail about it.

  • About the PNV- you might want to check with your insurance to see what they will cover.  Most will cover a script but maybe not OTC, unless you have Flex Spending or something similar.

     GL!

Gah!  Exactly with the constipation, no TMI here!  I was taking some OTC ones for a while and they did the same to me so I stopped.  She said if these made me constipated it was ok to take Colace (sp?)

And yes, we will talk Clomid in the coming months :)

  • I never used the prescription prenatals. I just took OTC, & then a separate DHA supplement.  I'm glad that you have a plan in action to help things along if AF doesn't resume here soon!

  • I have no advice on the PNV's, just wanted to say that I'm so glad you and your doc figured out a plan!  I hope everything goes well for you once it's time to TTC.

  • Natalie- I'm still taking the One-A-Day's and my doc said if they work for me stick with them. They have a seperate DHA vitamin (gel cap looking thing), which are important too!!! They're cheapy but seem to work :)

Only tip I can give you is to take them at night...I take them with dinner every night, that way i dont give them the chance to upset my tummy!

**Praying** AF shows up on her own, that way you can start TTC asap!!! xoxo

  • i started on prescription PNVs but my insurance changed so i went from paying $10 a month to $40!! so i just started taking the vitafusion prenatals (bought them at target) and even though they have DHA in them, i have a seperate DHA supplement also. The previous ones i was taking had 200mg and the gummies only have 50 so i thought that was a big difference.

I go on the bump trying to get pregnant board and there are a lot of ladies with PCOS on there so you might want to check it out there...or at least lurk. If you are going to go the temping/charting route when you start TTC, i suggest doing it on fertility friend (you can click my ticker) and there is a lot of info on there when you start TTC! I do hope AF shows up for you!!
