Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Poop and pediatrician ?'s

DD isn't quite 3 months old yet, so I'm jumping the gun posting here.  But she just has a week to go and I figured I'd get more responses over here.

I just started her on formula last week because my milk dried up.  I have a freezer stash and I'm giving her about 6-8oz of BM a day.  Otherwise, it's Enfimily ProSobee (soy due to milk allergy).

She's been having trouble pooping.  She'll have maybe one turd a day.  It's tiny and hard.  She has an awful time getting it out.  She'll scream and cry and look at me as if saying "HELP ME MOM!"

But until today, a poop always came out during these episodes.  This morning she started screaming and pushing and no poop came out.  I tried my mother's remedy of a thermometer in her bum.  No luck.

I called her doctor this morning and left a message at 9am.  It's now noon and I haven't gotten a call back.

QUESTIONS

1)  How long is too long to wait for a call back from the doc?  I am already going to change doctors for her, but I wanted to avoid going in to get an answer to her problem.  And calling a new doc would mean another appt. I think making a child suffer like this when all she has to do is call me back is unacceptable.  How long does it take your pedi to call back?

2)  If you have dealt with consitpation and/or hard poop, what did your doc suggest to do to remedy?

Re: Poop and pediatrician ?'s

  • -Warm bath w/ tummy massage

-Tablespoon of dark karo syrup (double boil it if you're paranoid - I used it straight from bottle - it was MAGIC and you can use it every day if you have to)

-Glycerin infant suppository in worst case scenario (instantly works - over the counter)

I was told that 3 days was the maximum to wait for a bowel movement before an intervention - but I formula feed.

But I think something needs to be done about the hard poop, it shouldn't be hard as far as I understand and she shouldn't be in pain.

PP - when they call you back, I would say something about the long wait.  If she is still in pain, I would call again.

  • I'm going to call them back at 1:30 when they come back from lunch.  I'm also going to call another doctor this afternoon to make her 4 month appt.  This is just unacceptable to me!

  • My Pedi recommends no more then 4 oz of half strength prune juice a day.  One of my girls has a similar issue occasionally and this works for her.  So I pour 2 oz of juice and 2 oz of water and warm it to the normal bottle temp and let her have what she wants.  Some days she finishes it all some days not.

If I call my pedi with a question I get a call back within an hour.  When I call the triage line they tell me that if I do not get a call back within 1 hour to call back again.  I would be upset in your situation.

Hope your LO is feeling better soon!

  • DS is FF and was badly constipated. I tried everything except Karo. We did juice (straight and mixed), straight water, different kinds of water, thermometer, suppository, belly rubs, warm baths, changing formula's and we tried all of them and landed on Similac. He was still having trouble so I decided to try one last formula and GoodStart did the trick.
  • Soy will constipate them and it's normal for my DD to have hard poop or it come out in clumps. If it really seems to be bothering her I give her a little bit of prune juice which solves the problem for awhile.

You also have to know that their bowel movements change drastically when you switch from breast milk to formula especially soy. My DD was breast feed for 3 months where she went several times a day then had to switch to soy and she maybe will go once every other day; it's completely normal. IMO I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of pooping she will eventually go. As for the pedi I don't think I would switch just because they didn't call you back about this problem too quickly.

  • I may not have been clear in my OP.  It isn't the lack of poop that I was concerned about.  It was her strained pushing and screaming with no poop results that is breaking my heart.  Her poop is also super hard.  Hard as a hard adult poop.

Since the doc hadn't called me back and I'd called another local doctor's office who kept me on hold for 15+ minutes 3 seperate times, I used Dr Internet and mixed 1:1 prune juice and water.  DD wouldn't take it.  Not even out of a dropper or off of my finger.

The doctor finally called me back over an hour after I'd left my 2nd message for her. She seemed really annoyed that I'd called her.  She told me to give her apple juice.  Because of the prune juice problem, I asked the doc if I could mix the apple juice with formula to get her to take it.  She said she didn't know (uhhh) and DD would definitely take it because she doesn't have taste buds yet.

REALLY?!  Because they actually develop them during pregnancy.  And I'm pretty sure DD didn't refuse the prune juice because it had to many calories.

She will NOT be going back to this doctor.  Who is also my doctor.  I picked her because she does whatever I say.  But I'm not confident enough in my knowledge of pediatric medicine to keep her as DD's doctor.

Thanks for your help everyone!  I'm going to try the apple juice tonight.  Hopefully it'll result in some relief for the poor babe.

  • Good luck! and just to note my DD's poop has been like that as well, in a big clump and hard, so it's not just your baby. Also, try Karo syrup (I think that's how it's spelled) that may work, GL!
