Gals with cats

I know a good number of you ladies have cats. Sort of stemming from my post below, my doctor today told me I should start not cleaning the litter box anymore since we are TTC in the next few months.

How strict did you follow this while you were PG?

I don't have a cat, but I think it's something to be serious about. I remember when I was little that my mom never went near where we kept the litter box when she was PG with my brothers. My cousin who had a baby last year gave their cat to my aunt to live with her for the duration of her pregnancy so it wasn't an issue.

When we were TTC my Doc told me that the risk for Toxoplasmosis is not anything to worry about while TTC. I've had my kitty for about 12 years now and he said - if I was gonna catch it, I already have by now and I already have the anti-bodies for it.

He said it's fine to change it, but if I want to be cautious to wear a mask, and wash my hands throughly after it (which is an obvious regardless of TTC).

He said, once you are pregnant - if you can avoid it - do it.

I changed it when I was PG with Caroline and I've changed it this time around too. I have no choice though because DH travels some and it needs to be changed whether or not he's here to change it. I sometimes change it when he's around because I hate nagging him about doing it.

Like Fanny, I've had cats forever and my doc said something similar about me having antibodies.

We've got a cat and I never cleaned the litter box while pregnant. Not even once. You can get toxoplasmoses from the cat feces. Which can result in a m/c or eye/nerve-system defects. So not something to take too lightly.

Eh, I would just use it as an excuse to take 9 glorious months off from cleaning the litter box. I sure did.

I never cleaned the cat box when I was pregnant. I still haven't cleaned it since having Reese. I told DH that you aren't supposed to do it while BFing either, & he hasn't googled it & busted me out yet. Stick out tongue

Thanks for your input ladies! Guess I'm going to have to show DH how to clean the litter box. Can you believe he's never done it before?!

I changed it once or twice because, like Shannon, I hated nagging DH about it. At the time we had petsitters coming to let the dog out during the day so I paid them to do it once a week, and DH (usually) did it once a week. I read the same thing about antibodies but I still tried to be careful about it (as well as a lot of other things some might consider overkill like lunchmeat and soft serve). I did not avoid it until after my BFP, however.
