argh! hunger strike

I'm about to tear my hair out...both my kids have gone on a hunger strike this week. For some reason they've simultaneously decided that solids suck and are refusing to eat. There's nothing wrong with the food - I've tasted it, and they were happily eating meals from the same batches of frozen food just 3 days ago - but they've both started refusing, even when I tempt them with their favorites.

I thought maybe they were starting to rebel against spoon feeding, but neither seems interested in self feeding. The only thing I can coax them into accepting are fruit purees, and even that takes effort. I'm thinking of trying of mixing some sweet veggies (sweet potato, pumpkin, that kind of thing) in with some of their fruit tonight to see if that will be acceptable.

I'm also going to buy some jars of baby food to see if they like that better, although I'm hoping not because it will be so much more expensive. Sad

Any other ideas? Thoughts? Maybe I should just go with the flow for the time being vs trying to convince them to eat again, but to be honest my motives are totally selfish: if they stop eating solids, they'll start wanting bottles at night and I don't want to go back to that again!

Re: argh! hunger strike

  • Oy.  That stinks :(   I really have no advice.  I think mixing veggies in w/ fruit like you said is a good idea.  If you find baby food in a jar that they do like, you could still make your own after you figure out what kind they want.

Oh, and I wonder if, after the do have jarred food for a couple meals, if "real" food might be more appealing.  Maybe trying jars for a few days will snap them out of it?

  • Well they ate the sweet potato and pumpkin mixed with apple. Maybe they've just decided they don't like anything other than sweet stuff? Odd since although they've always enjoyed their food (the only things they've refused to eat are avocado and peas). It's also strange to me that they both decided simultaneously to do this, although I kinda suspect Dash of being the ringleader - Will eats a few bites, then notices Dash isn't eating and then stops. Ugh!

I'm going to try the jarred food like you suggested - lol you might be right that after a taste or two of one of the grosser ones they'll be more receptive to the homemade stuff. Stick out tongue

  • Two ideas...the first...teething? I know Libby backs off on her solids for a few days when a new tooth is errupting. Once it's broken the skin she seems happy to eat again.

Second...maybe they'd like to self-fed some age appropriate finger foods? Like steamed apples (without skin), roasted sweet potato (cut into sticks or fries), steamed green beans, etc. Or, maybe homemade purees might do the trick? It's interesting that they've both gone on strike at the same time...so perhaps it's the jarred food you've been offering? Maybe it tastes or feels different to them?

I don't think it's teething - they usually like to eat even more when they have a tooth coming through.

I thought the same thing about self feeding, so I tried them on finger foods and they were not interested in the slightest.

They seldom get store bought food - the only jarred food we use is pear puree since it's a lot cheaper than processing the fruit myself, but everything else is homemade already. I did a little googling and it seems like some babies suddenly decide at this age (8/9 months) that they only like one type of food - it seems like my dudes have decided that sweet things like fruit, pumpkin and sweet potatoes are the only tasty meals right now. I'm going to go with it for a week or so, then slowly sneak the other stuff back in and see how that goes down.

Wow, didn't realize babies are already subject to peer pressure at such a young age!

I have no advice cuz we're still going super slow with solids esp with that red eye thing that keeps coming every time, so I have no experience with getting them to eat more...except sometimes if B doesn't like something, I'll put more bm in it because he always likes bm. So if the boys like their formula a lot or something, maybe that could work? Not sure...but hope this phases passes soon and GL!

Neither did I! I don't know if it's a baby thing or a twin thing, but they definitely play off each other. They do it during nap times, too - like if Will decides he doesn't want to nap, Dash will refuse to as well ("If he's staying up to party, so am I!").

They interact so much these days and it's adorable - I love it when they crack up laughing just from looking at each other - but sometimes it makes me want to tear my hair out lol.

haha I did not think of this way but that's so true/funny!

my initial thought was teething too....or it could just be a phase... Miss A used to love sweet potatoes and now she turns her nose up to it...she used to love carrots and then wouldn't touch them and then last week started loving them again. so who knows! i'd just go w/the flow and not stress about it too much.  just figure out what they will eat and feed them as much of it as they'll eat :) once they outgrow this phase you can worry more about balance!

That is just too dang cute!  Yesterday me & hubs took E to the park.  There was a couple that had 6 month old twin girls.  I was wheeling myself around their stroller to get closer to where E was playing and I looked inside only to see aNOTHER baby, TRIPLETS!  So when I started talking to the dad, he points and says, yeah, and our 2 year old is over there (pointing to the slide).  I've heard of 2 under 2...but 4 under 2????

I would DIE. Seriously. I know it might not be a nice thing to say, but I'd genuinely be devastated if I got pregnant again in the next year or two (I don't want any more kids hands down and plan on Ben getting the ole snip, but it would be a million times worse if it accidentally happened in the next couple of years). Those are some crazy and very organized parents and my hat is off to them!

Also, Jaime that's good to hear about A's food preferences! Maybe they're just going through a picky stage?

LOL...on the bright side, if she had any morning sickness, she only gets it twice for 4 kids. I think that's a pretty good deal =P haha
