To go to the hospital or not?.....

So I went into the doctor on Friday for a UTI or kidney infection. (they sent the cultures to lab over weekend)

She put me on antibiotics and I started to feel a tiny bit better over the next few days.

This morning I woke up and I was a mess. I've been breaking into random cold sweats, getting nauseous, I'm extremely fatigued and I have a pretty severe pain in my right kidney that comes and goes.

I called my doctor 3 times this morning and finally got through to a nurse. It turns out the doctor left at 11:00 this morning (when I had orginally called). So she called the doctor and informed her of my symptoms and they are just going to change antibiotics, even though she knows now that I have a kidney infection.

I've been told that most doctors put their patients in hospitals when they have a kidney infection. Should I just switch antibiotics like the doctor says or should I go into the hospital?

I feel like I should go into the hospital but I don't want to go if they won't do anything for me.

  • Are you in a lot of pain?  I wound up in the hospital for a kidney infection because I was in so much pain and could barely move.

I would probably go to the ER so you can be seen by a dr and be prescribed the right antibiotic. Most likely, they'll give you an IV of the antibiotic so you'll start feeling better quickly.

  • I say it depends. Did the doc actually diagnose you with a kidney infection or did you self-diagnose?

If you are uncomfortable with the advice of your doc, you could always call a triage nurse at the hospital and get their recommendation.

  • I go in and out of a lot of pain.

I could barely get up and walk earlier and I know it will come back soon.

I mean, I've been in worse pain but it's getting close to being unbearable.

  • I agree with the above post.. I would go to the ER.. pain + cold sweats + nauseous = go to the ER to me!

I hope you feel better soon :)

  • Well I already KNEW that I had a kidney infection as of Friday which is why I got into the doc immediately. (I have always had a chronic problem with UTI's and kidney infections and can always tell the difference)

    Today, my doctor confirmed it.

I wouldn't be so concerned for my sake because I know how to get over it and deal with the pain, I'm just worried about baby more than anything Sad I don't want to put the baby in danger...

  • I've had several kidney infections and kidney stones in my life. The only time I've gone to the hospital (ER) is when the pain gets to be unbearable. My docs have never seen the need to admit me for kidney infection or UTI. Even with kidney stones, I wasn't admitted. I was given pain killers and got on a plane an hour later. Maybe I just have a high pain threshold though.

  • Go to the ER, untreated kidney infections can be harmful to the baby. I also have chronic problems with UTI's and Kindey infections (since I was born) and I went to the ER 2 weeks ago and they did an ultrasound on my kidneys etc I think you should go to get the care you need and the peace of mind this will offer. Plus you'll get to see your little one :)

  • I would definitely go to the hospital. Getting second opinions from other doctors is always good. And like you said you are more concerned how it will affect the baby so for that reason you should definitely go.
