Not including words that we understand but others wouldn't, we are at a solid 16 words. I feel confident going into the 18 month wellness visit that Matt will meet (or will soon meet) the 20 word goal.
That doesn't count words like wawa (water) or moo for cows or quack for ducks. It also doesn't include his valiant attempt at squirrel (squil).
I think we hit that point where words are coming fast - he added three new words just last week.
So I am going to stop worrying about his words. Next in line for my worrying - his low weight.
Re: Closing in on 20 words
This one made my day and I vote you count it.
If he pointed at a "squil" and was saying this with delight - I would totally understand it. Ditto for "wawa".
*ETA* And nice work Matty and Mommy!
I really do love it when he tries. I have to remember to get it on video sometime.

You watch, suddenly it's going to be 3 new words a day, then 3 new words an hour. I think they just get to a certain point & they suddnly KNOW how to talk.
Awww thanks for thinking of us.
Yes, I would count those two. Great job!
Even my 3 y.o. was "Soupman" (Superman) for Halloween.
Matty and Mommy are doing great!
