If your LO is paci-free at night...

please tell me how you did it? LO is waking up a few times a night for the paci to be put back in. DH and I would like to break this habit. How did you do it? How many nights did it take?

Re: If your LO is paci-free at night...

  • She just eventually preferred her fingers to her paci.  She'd spit it out and suck on her fingers instead.

  • We started at daycare naps without a paci and that went smoothly. At night it was tough the first night. We put a hand on her belly, or we held her to calm her down. We also didn't rush to her the first peep she made. Once it escalated into actual crying, and not whining/whimpering then we went in. It only took 2-ish days. She's been paci-free for almost 2 weeks now. Very happy!

  • We never used the paci at night or naptime. We figured that it would be easier to get rid of it down the road if she didn't rely on it. The paci is usually a last resort for us and it has worked out well.

At this age I would do it cold turkey. It might suck for a day or two but they are still young enough to break the habit quickly.

  • We've gone paci-free twice. The first time, he was just over 3 mo, and he was waking many times a night. So one night we went cold turkey. It was a long night and each time he woke up, we had to pick him and and hold him upright until he fell back asleep. The next night, he didn't fuss much and by the third night, he didn't want or need it.

He went paci-free for about 3 weeks and then during a growth spurt/4 mo wakeful we gave it back to him because, well, I'm not sure why...

The second time we went paci-free was part of the ferber method. He's been sleeping without a paci for the past 9 nights and we haven't felt compelled to give it back when he fusses/cries during the night. He usually only wakes up once to eat, and other than that, he's sleeping like a champ.

  • I don't like that I had to resort to this, but I used the Ferber method just for quitting the paci habit.  It worked in less than a week.

  • We used the Pantley's Gentle Removal Plan from The No Cry Sleep Solution.  It's meant for and "sucking to soothe" that your LO might be doing whether its breast, bottle, or paci.  The link below has pretty much the exact same info as the book.  It worked for us in 2 nights (really it worked the 1st night, but I didn't feel like I could really say that until we had 2 successful nights with no paci ;-)
