Want to hear from anyone who had a baby boy at 28 weeks

Just had my 3rd child on 11/8. My first son, Sammy. He was born at 28 weeks gestation and is expected to be in the NICU for up to 3 months. I would like to hear your stories...the good, the bad, the happy and sad. Thanks in advance for sharing.

  • First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on your son's birth! Welcome to the board!  It's a crazy ride, and the ladies on this board are very helpful.

Isaac was born May 7 2010 at 2lbs 5 oz at 27 weeks 3 days.  He was on a ventillator for 4 days and c=pap for 1 (I  had steroid shots so his lungs were a bit more developed).  He had a PDA (heart murmur) which closed up after 3 rounds of ibuprofin, and a few months of waiting - it wasn't a huge concern at the time.   We were in the hospital for 63 days, and he came home at 36 weeks, just under 6lbs - this surprised us - I thought we'd be there a little longer, and that he wouldn't be so big.  After the first 3 days home, and  al lot of effort, he was BFing exclusively.  We were very blessed, in that he didn't have many major issues to deal with.  We had setbacks here and there, but nothing compared to some other babies.  He is now 6 months (3 corrected), weighs 14lbs!!!!

I hope that things go well for your little guy.  If you can, keep up the pumping, and do as much Kangaroo care as you can!

  • Congratulations on the birth of your son!

My son was born at 26 weeks.  He was on the vent for about a week, then on CPAP for 6 weeks, nasal cannula for about 3 and then went home without any oxygen assistance.  He had lots of bradys and apneas in the beginning, but outgrew them at around 34 weeks gestation.

It was tough, he was in the NICU for 11 weeks, but came home without any meds or oxygen, just an apnea monitor as a precaution.  Now he is a happy, healthy  5 year old.  He is developmentally and physically on track with his peers.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you have.

  • Congratulations!  My son (also named Sam!) was born at 27 weeks and 3 days.  His birth was a complete surprise, so even though I had steroids, there wasn't much time for them to work.  Sam was ventilated for 1 day, then went back and forth between CPAP and nasal canula for many weeks.  He went off of oxygen for good around 35 weeks.

Sam went home just 2 days before his due date.  The delay was mostly due to feeding issues.  It can take a long time for them to learn to drink from a bottle.

Now Sam is 9 months (6 months adjusted) and he is doing great!  He has no health problems and is very advanced for his adjusted age.

The NICU time is hard, with a lot of ups and downs.  I wish you all the best!

  • My lo was born at 25w4days but they think they may have been a little further along.  He was 2lbs 5oz at birth and had to be on the vent for almost 4 weeks. Then we was on cpap and nasal cannula.  It was a roller coaster ride and when they tell you premies take one step forward and 2 steps back it is sooo true.  He came home 22 days before his due date and is doing awesome.  He is 7mo now and weighs over 16 lbs.  At his 6mo appt he was on the 6mo charts and meeting his 6mo milestones.  He has been the happiest baby, smiling all the time and laughing 2.  It is so unimaginably hard to be in the NICU but once you get home it makes all the hard times go away.  I look back now and don't know how we did it but you do get through it.  Congrats on your new arrival and try and enjoy watching your lo one grow.
  • Congrats! Andrew was born at 26w2d and he's doing really great now!
  • CONGRATULATIONS!  By now, you're probably over the initial shock.  I had my first child over 2 years ago at 28 wks 2 days.  He was on a ventilator for less than 24 hours.  They told us to expect him to be in the NICU for up to 3 months.

So imagine my surprise, when 6 weeks later they said "start getting ready for him to come home."   I thought they meant several weeks off.  Then a few days later they said "he's going home tomorrow!"  It was 7 weeks later, and 5 weeks BEFORE his due date!    But he was holding his temperature, and had been feeding like a champ all along.   I forget when he first started breastfeeding, but the nurses said it was about a week earlier than most other babies even try to start.

But this isn't to say we had our ups & downs...the apneas & bradys.  The billirubin levels, etc.  The total scare when the neurologist called.

But he's now totally fine!  The ONLY thing he is slightly behind on is speech.  However, that is normal for boys, and normal for boys in both my family & my husband's family.      The first year, he tracked about 2 months behind -- which I viewed as "one month ahead" based on his adjusted age!   He started walking at 11 months actual age.

My baby went from skinny to fat within 2 months of coming home from the hospital.  By the time he was 4 months old, people wouldn't believe he was a preemie!  And he was 3 lbs 2 oz when born!   He weighed over 9 lbs on his due date.

I didn't know anything about preemies before this experience.  None of my friend or family had had one.  Now I know way more than I ever wanted.

I was a bit paranoid once he came home, due to RSV and catching germs.  The Drs/nurses scared me so much.  They said the worst thing that could happen is for him to go back in the hospital.  I probably over did it, but we didn't let him leave the house until 3.5 months old (at Christmas)  We took turns going to church, and hired a babysitter when I wanted to go to the grocery, etc.  I made people wash their hand as soon as they entered the house.  Maybe I was a bit paranoid, but you know what?  Our son is 2 years old and has never been sick!

I'm probably forgetting much more of the bad/sad stuff, but it really does fade from the memory.

     Best of luck to you!
