CD mom's with babies on solids

Stupid question following!

We will be starting DD on solids sometime in the next month (after all the crazy is over!). I know once she is eating things other than BM I have to rinse/wipe the poop away but will I know when I have to start doing that....or is it always?

The reason I'm asking is we did give DD a few slurps of curry last night to calm her down while we were out (she actually loved it!) and her diaper is obviously a little different today (still like BM poop but a little...thicker - sorry TMI!). Do I need to wipe/rinse it?

Ugh I am really not looking forward to this part!

  • Many might tell you yes, but some diaper instructions will tell you differently. The ones I got from CottonBabies said as lon as they are breasfed, you do not have to do anything! Yes it actually said that.

  • You'll know.  Things will start to thicken up or you'll see chunks.  At that point you'll need to rinse, spray, scrape, use liners - whatever your weapon of choice is.  At this point I would think everything would still wash out fine.

And pp - I think they mean exclusively BF.  DS still nurses some, but we absolutely have to plop his poop these days.

  • We made a DIY diaper sprayer (I just googled some instructions, can't remember where from) and started using it once we noticed the thickening like you said.  I don't know if it's really necessary yet since he's not totally into solids, but it definitely has helped cut down on the work load for our washing machine.  I was having to throw some of the poopy ones back in for a second round whereas now they are coming out white and clean on the first.

  • I started using the diaper sprayer as soon as we started solids.  Be aware that you'll get "chunks" of half digested food when you first start finger foods - it was a bit alarming at first ;-)

There's a nasty in between stage but eventually most of the poop becomes "ploppable" and doesn't require as much spraying.

  • We started ECing about a week ago and I haven't had to clean any poopy diapers since, but before that there were a few weeks where he had the "thicker" poo that you speak of in the diaper.  I would rinse the diaper before putting it in the diaper bag, and I did not enjoy it.  It's one of the reasons we starting EC.
  • I may be in the minority here but we don't rinse his diapers yet.  We started solids on Thanksgiving and have given him something to eat about once per day since. He's starting to ingest a little more now but his poos are by no means "solid" yet.  Just a thicker paste, which still comes out fine in the wash.  I imagine it will be pretty obvious when you really should start doing it....

  • LO is 21m and I have never once rinsed or sprayed a CD. When she first started solids, I used a piece of toilet paper to scrape the poo into the toilet. I didn't work too hard though-I got off as much as I could and didn't worry about the rest. As your LO starts eating more and more finger foods, the poop becomes easily ploppable. It's just the nasty in-between stage where they're eating mostly purees and BM that's pretty gross. Doesn't last long though!

Glad to hear this.  I actually gagged today changing DS's diaper.  The smell and sight of it is horrendous.
