Cutting your LO's Finger nails...

Anyone else have trouble cutting your LO's finger nails?  I have tried doing it while DD is sleeping, and also having DH hold her still while I do it.  I get SO nervous that I am going to nick her little hands and usually I end up doing just that!  Last night I did it again!  Of course DH is SOOO helpful, NOT!  He makes me feel worse...as if I nicked her on purpose right?  Any suggestions on making this task easier and less chance of nicking her fingers?

Re: Cutting your LO's Finger nails...

  • At my pedi's suggestion, we file DS's nails down with an emory board instead of cutting them.

  • what I do, is go to the very tip and slowly trim them down, I don't go big chucks, just small clips. also I wait until DS is dead a sleep no chance of waking up.

Ugh.  My DH refuses to do this task because he is so afraid of hurting DD, but he also totally psyches me out... My only advice is to do it while they are sleeping, and to just go suuuper slowly.  I get the clipper right up against the skin, hold it there for a minute to make sure I'm not going to clip skin, and then quickly clip before she can change position.  It takes me like 25 minutes lol....

  • I agree with PP about doing it during sleeping. Also, make sure you have a baby finger nail clipper. I think it just takes practice - sometimes I do a better job than others!

  • I think this is my only parenting complaint, lol! My DH nipped skin the first time he cut DD's nails, so now he refuses to do it (poor thing...DH, not DD...she was fine instantly, lol). The file takes way too long and doesn't do the trick. DD's nails seem to grow so fast!! I have to wait until she's sleeping, but it's super hard b/c even then she moves her arms and hands when I pick up her hand. Plus, she needs to be swaddled to sleep soundly, so it's random when she's out cold unswaddled. I feel like I have to keep the clippers in my back pocket at all times, to grab the right moment!

  • we just file them...soooo much less stressful

I use the baby clippers and sort of rub the bottom part under the nail a bit to make sure I have only nail and no skin. It takes me forever to do them but so far so good.

Same here. You can tell if you have just the nail if you slide the baby clippers side to side before making the cut. This does take a lot longer, but I haven't nicked him yet.

  • I nicked DS1's finger when he was about 4 months old, and refused to cut baby nails after that. Though now that he's big enough, I will cut them, but it still freaks me out. Sigh. We have a teeny emory board from a travel nail kit that works perfect on DS2's nails. My sister peels her DD's nails, but I'm too wimpy for that, even. hth

  • DH cuts DS's fingernails while I am nursing DS. That is when he is the most calm. His sleep is precious to me and I don't want to risk waking him up by cutting his nails then.

I'm going to try this! Good idea! I feel the same way about disturbing the sleep!

  • This is the only thing I make DH do (and told him he would have to do since I was pregnant!). Still, he's only managed to cut DS's nails a few times (he has only been able to do this while DS sleeps) - which means DS's nails are usually longish and he cuts himself in the face often!

    :(

  • I peeled them for a while, but that can be pretty tricky, esp. if LO is resisting in any way.  If you can do it, then go for it.  I'm pretty anal abut nails, so I finally gave in a tried trimming them.  I've gotten her skin once, but every other time has been alright.
  • I am terrified to trim them. That is DH's job, he is much better about doing it. With my DS#1 the forst time I tried to cut his nails I made him bleed and I felt so awful : (

  • Per a suggestion from a friend I bite hers. When she is nursing I take the hand that is up and gently bite them, that way I can feel her fingertips.

  • I have a diamond file from Sally's Beauty Supply, and I use it to file her nails.  I have to do it about every six days or so, but it doesn't take long at all.

My pedi suggested clipping the corner, and tearing the rest.  The clip makes it easier to tear I guess?  HTH!
