Doctor Rec and or Hospital Rec

I normally post over on 1st tri and just found out there is a local board here on the bump. I hope you ladies can help me out...

I'm just under 11 weeks and while I like my doctor's office, the doctor I have been seeing prior to my BFP is no longer allowed to see me (I'm now with the midwives). Anyhow, they are only affiliated with Howard county hospital and after the tour (and stories from friends as well as bad service for my dad in the ER when he went in last year), I'm not sure I want to deliver there.

So we're considering the new Baltimore Washington Medical Center (Glen Burnie) or Annapolis Medical Center. After checking with our insurance, we'd have to select a doctor who participates there to deliver with or they won't cover any of the cost at all.

So while we're going to tour those two and ask them what insurance their on calls doctors take, I'm thinking it best to consider switching doctors now before I'm too far along and so I'm not screaming to check insurance providers while in labor.

So do you have any recs for either a doctor or a hospital in particular?

Re: Doctor Rec and or Hospital Rec

  • AAMC was fabulous. I loved my L&D there. I think most of the ladies who delivered at Howard County General had good experiences too. I would choose between those two.

  • AAMC was awesome!  L & D nursers are great, I had an emergency c section and was so glad I was there for my 4 days of recovery.  We have since moved an hour away and are still going there for this delivery.  I go to Chesapeake Women's Care which is located in one of the surrounding hospital buildings and they are great.  It's a large practice but you rotate through all of the dr's so when it comes time for delivery you know the dr. For me it's well worth the drive.

No advice regarding docs, b/c we delivered at GBMC, but good luck no matter who/where you choose.

  • BWMC in Glen Burnie might be a little iffy. I know their L&D is new and I know someone who works in that hospital who has implied that it's not that great.

We will deliver at HCGH. I've heard good things and it's the hospital I'm most familiar with.

  • I go to the BayArea Midwifery center, and am delivering at AAMC. It's a bit of  a drive for us, but I really like the mid-wives there. If there is a problem they work with the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine on Bestgate road in Annapolis.

  • No idea about those hospitals/practices, but I just wanted to say hi and congrats, Shelly!

  • Well, my OB is in Clarksville plus they are affiliated with HCGH so I don't think that will work for you. I delivered both kids at HCGH. Now with Cecilia, I was one of maybe over 50 women who delivered that day. The maternity/ L&D wards were packed. Judging by the service I got from the nurses, you wouldn't have known. Both times I had great nurses and good stays. The rooms are a little small. Really what it all comes down to is the medical professionals who are taking care of you. That right there is what makes for a good or bad experience.

I have to agree with Kendra here.  I actually didn't deliver at either of those hospitals, but I just wanted tell you congratulations and good luck with your search.

I've heard positive stories from everyone who has delivered at AAMC.

  • Another AAMC mom/baby here, and the experience was great and John was born 2 days before xmas, so I know there were a few distractions being the holiday season, but we still had a good experience.  I went to Chesapeake Womens care, they have an office in Gambrills and one actually on the centers grounds.  I still love the practice, but with our next one we are going to use Bayarea Midwifery, which they can also deliver at AAMC.  We have friends that used them and had a fantastic experience delivering at AAMC

  • I have never personally delivered at either of those hospitals.  But I have assisted women at AAMC and I have enjoyed my experience there.  They have a nice facility and the nurses were very supportive to my clients and their preferences.

I delivered DS with Bay Area midwives at their birth center which is on the grounds/property of AAMC and adjacent to the Clatanoff Pavilion (L&D ward) of AAMC.  I had a great experience with them.

I delivered DD @ AAMC and have no complaints about the hospital, but I was happy to avoid it this time around.

  • My question to you is what kind of labor experience do you want?  If you want to be able to labor in a tub then I would pick BWMC as they have lots of laboring tubs whereas AAMC only has two rooms with tubs in them and they are primarily reserved for moms with multiples as the rooms are bigger.

I gave birth at Special Beginnings, which is the other birth center in Anne Arundel Co.  I had a wonderful experience there and the midwives also have hospital privledges at AAMC.  (Before going to SB I was with Annapolis OB/Gyn and I wasn't too pleased w/my experience).

I didn't even know that AAMC had 2 rooms with tubs.  They definitely don't mention this in the general hospital birth class that is taught there.

That is what the lady told me when I went on my tour but I think that I asked about it.  From what I gather they really don't want people in the tubs but that is more from what some people who work there have told me.  Instead, the tour lady told me that I could labor in the shower if I wanted to.  I looked at the size of the shower and I told my husband you have got to be kidding me.  There won't be any room! lol

Yeah- I remember someone in my class asking if there were tubs and the nurse/instructor saying if you wanted to birth in the water you had to go to Special Beginnings- she didn't know about Bay Area I guess, because she definitely did not mention them, nor did she mention the tubs @ AAMC- which I guess you can "labor" in but not deliver in- my guess is that it's probably tough to labor in a tub or shower for that matter, if you are hooked up to one or any of the following:  IV, BP monitor, fetal monitor, contrax monitor...  when I was induced with DD I had all that going on and basically was told not to move because if I moved the monitors wouldn't work.  It was a grand time.

lol sooo true and how ironic bc I am pretty sure that AAMC owns Bay Area now...  (And you are right you can only labor in them not give birth.  The lady that gave our tour stressed rather emphatically that the only place that you can give birth at AAMC is on the bed).

  • please don't worry about switching doctors too late. I am 36 weeks 1 day and looking into switching now. They may be booked, but I have found some midwives that aren't and willing to take me. It's never too late, if you are not happy (unless you have a history of pre-term labor, but I don't) you can switch anytime and have heard of people switching at 39 weeks.

  • I delivered at AAMC in June and was very happy with my experience.  We were going to deliver at BWMC but decided not to b/c they don't have a NICU.  DD ended up being in the NICU for a week and the nurses in there were amazing.
