So when we went to the dr on Tuesday for LO's 6 week check up his dr came to the conclusion that he has acid reflux and put him on Zantac to see if it would help him. The reason he thinks that he has it is because at night for 4-5 hours straight he cries and criesd and cries and nothing helps him. He has real bad gas but gas drops don't even help him! He also weighed 12lbs 5oz at this check up and only weighed 6lbs 10oz at birth (& was 4 weeks early) so he has almost doubled his birth weight. His dr said that usually when babies are this big at this age it's because they like to eat all the time because they feel like it will make them feel better but it only makes it worse and this is exactly how LO is. So before he was put on the Zantac he really didn't spit up no more than normal, but now that he is on the medicine he spits up quite a bit after each feeding. Like it's hard for him to fall back asleep after each nightly feeding and then about 15 min after he is finished eating he spits up and falls right to sleep. Is this normal? Has anybody had expierience with Zantac? His dr wanted me to call back in a week to see if the medicine was helping but I just wanted to see if anybody else had went through this.
TIA

zantac did not work well for my daughter. prevacid is off and on though.
I am confused on why your dr would say they eat more to compensate and that your baby has gained so much due to reflux. Usually babies with reflux will not gain weight, not gain to much weight. honestly that sounds like backwards thinking. My son was like yours and gained 10X the amount of weight he should have. but it was just because he was hungry. which is what sounds like your baby is.
I am in a failure to thrive issue because my daughter is not gaining weight because she is spitting up 1/3 of what she eats ALL day long. she is 10# 2oz, and has been that weight for 3 weeks.
Is there another pedi you can ask? Because honestly, if your child had reflux, you would know and eating would not be pleasant for them or you!
No, that's not true. Babies with acid reflux will sometimes overeat, in an attempt to soothe, or to "swallow" the acid back down. In fact, my LO will sometimes act like she is crazed with hunger right after finishing a bottle. It's not because she actually is hungry, but she's looking for a way to feel better, and when she is drinking, she temporarily feels better.
