Two Under 2

Do we need a 2nd crib?

DS is 15 months old and we're expecting #2 in a few weeks.  They will be almost 16 months apart.  We haven't planned on getting a 2nd crib, because we figure that the new baby will live in our room in a bassinet pnp for a few months and by the time he's ready to move upstairs, DS could easily be climbing out of his crib and needing a big boy bed.  It didn't seem logical to spend the money on a 2nd crib just to use it for a few months until DS starts climbing.  But my mom just called and said she and my dad would like to buy something for the new baby and asked what we needed- such as a crib or maybe a 2nd glider.  I don't know what to tell them.  I wish they would have offered before we bought our double stroller, because that would've been the perfect gift.  Now there's just nothing I can think of that we really need.  Maybe I'll just have to tell them diapers or something lame, but I know they'd like to do a lot more.

Re: Do we need a 2nd crib?

  • YES!!! Buying a 2nd crib was the best money we spent for Baby #2! DD1 is still in her crib - she likes it & hasn't tried to climb out yet, and it is soo nice (especially in the morning if I am trying to take care of something for DD2 & she wakes up, she will hang out in her crib talking to herself & playing for a little bit).

My advice would be to get a convertible crib. We got one from Walmart.com (Baby Mod brand). It was very reasonabley priced (around $200 I think) & it came with the toddler bed rail. It looks like a more expensive piece of furniture than it is. Well worth the $$!!!!

ETA: Here is the one we got.

  • DS1 was a little older than your DS will be (21 months), but we didn't get a second crib.  The LO was in our room for 6 months and we had moved DS1 into his big bed months before that.  He was just over 2 when we moved him.  It worked out great!

  • Our DS and DD will be 18 months apart and and we got a 2nd crib because I am going to try to keep my DS in his crib for as long as we can. He plays in his crib so well and that will help when she comes and I have to take care of things with her. She will not even be in her crib because she will be sleeping in our room for the first 6 months also. But my DS's crib will be a life saver at times I am sure!
  • We didn't get one (ours are 15 months apart). #2 was in our room for three months but either way, #1 transitioned to a toddler bed at 16 months so that freed up the crib.

To be honest we didn't plan on that... after the baby was born we went to the store with the intention of buying the second crib and came home with a toddler bed. Spur of the moment decision and we decided to give it a try. Don't regret it one bit.

I would not buy the second crib now. Wait until your baby is here and evaluate your needs then. Evey situation is different and it's a lot of money to spend.

  • Ours are 19 mos apart and I'm SO glad we got a second crib.  DD only spent about 7 weeks in our room before I moved her into her room.  DS shows no signs of wanting a big boy bed and I need him contained still at night and in the morning.  I really recommend it- btw, DS has a convertible crib so we can make it a toddler bed as soon as he's ready.

    Good luck!

  • NEED?  Probably not.

But it was some of the best $$$ I've ever spent.

    17 months apart here.

My oldest didn't try to climb out until 28 months and my youngest not until 30 months.

It's SO nice to have the older one contained while you tend to the younger one in the mornings!!!

A 2nd crib is at the top of the list for things I recommend to make 2u2 easier... right behind a GOOD carrier.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I think it really depends on the child (and sleeping arrangements)... we had 2 cribs for #1 and #2, they were 19 months apart, but they were in separate rooms and we put #2 in the crib from day one.  Fast forward to #3 and #4 (#1 and #2 are now sharing a room in "big boy beds" , #3 is 16 months old in a crib in her own room, and #4 is just born and sleeping in a bassinet in our room) To get the second crib from the boys room to the girls room we would have had to totally take it apart to move it, so we made the decision to keep #4 in the bassinet for as long as we could and then at about 21 months we transferred #3 into a toddler bed and then voila! we had a crib already in the girls room for #4.  #3 loves her big girl bed, and we have a gate on her door so she can't leave the room.  When she gets up in the morning she "reads" in her bed and when the baby wakes up she entertains her for a bit (#3 is 2 years and #4 is 10 months). GL!

  • Our 2u2 are 15 months apart.  We went for the extra crib because no way is DD1 ready to transition to a toddler bed.  They both have the Graco Lauren crib which I highly recommend and it changes into a toddler bed and for only $150 its a steal!  I think it just depends on your LO but my children tend to stay in their cribs until after 2 years and I like that better.  It can be a difficult transition and probably not one I would want to deal with when you have an new infant and 2u2!
