Babies: 9 - 12 Months

a question for the BFers in the house

since you have been nursing your LO have you noticed that you get sick more often?  i am just curious - it seems like i have been sick of one kind or another more in the last 11 months than i have been in the last 11 years!!  even when i was working at a daycare for 12 years with snotty, coughing, barfing kids all over the place!  i am just wondering if being a milk cow makes your immune system weaker?  anyone?

Re: a question for the BFers in the house

  • No- with the exception of this past weekend where a stomach bug made its way into our whole house!

I work with infants and toddlers all day long and I have had years where I was much more sick than I have been this year. Honestly though, I think it is hard to tease this out from daycare, my job or the time of year.

Sorry to hear you have been sick! Think of all the great immunity you are passing along to your LO!

  • I am still bfing too but don't find that I get sick more often. It does seem like if I do get sick though, I get it worse than others.
  • Maybe - but that could be because I'm not getting as much sleep (period, with any infant, but also since Sam still wakes once a night to nurse). Hard to compare myself to myself-not-breastfeeding :)

  • I've been BFing for over 13 months and haven't been sick once, not even a cold. And I usually get a pretty bad cough at least once a year...this year, nope.

  • I haven't been sick since a few months before Aven was born. And she hasn't really ever been sick, just some teething symptoms a few times. We own a retail store and she goes to work with me, so she and I are around the public. I just figured we've both been so healthy Because I'm still bfing.
  • nope, sorry you haven't been feeling well though.

  • thanks everyone!

i still take my pre-natals, but probably not as religiously as i should...  Hayden is never sick, save some teething symptoms.  it is worth everything, i was just trying to figure out why i have had something more than ever.

the person who mentioned sleep may be on to something there- Hayden does still wake up at least once (more when the teething thing is going on) to nurse.  that could be it.

i was just wondering if it is that or that i do SAH with my girl and maybe not gooing to a work place each day has lowered my resistence.

  • Nope! I have a cold right now, but I did this same time last year. I have a really pathetic picture from last year when I was very pregnant and the cold took me out! I work in places I could easily pick things up (schools and a little bit in a hospital) but think LO and I have been very fortunate. We both got the flu shot and have just been trying to stay healthy. Sorry you haven't been feeling well!

This makes a lot of sense! Lack of sleep definitely affects illness/immune system.

  • No, but a friend of mine got sick a lot when she was bfing. Her dr said it was b/c her DS was taking most of her immunities, so her body is more sensitive to getting sick. I don't know if that's true, but that's what he said.

  • Just since LO was born, I've gotten a sinus infection and two rounds of virus.  The sinus infection is par for the course (actually just had surgery last week to hopefully curb these), but I don't typically get viruses this often.  But I don't know if that's from BFing, picking up germs from daycare, or what.

  • I am actually healthier when BFing.  I haven't had anything that I can remember except some seasonal allergies.  Normally I would get a cold and since DH has one right now, I'm betting it is right around the corner for me.

  • I have had exceptionally good health this year. I put it down to being at home and not at work (I'm a high school teacher)
