DD has had 4 ear infections in the last 2 months... the minute her nose starts to run, she starts to tug on her ears, refuses to eat, and inevitably has an infection. I boil her pacifiers and nipples, wipe down toys a couple times a week, try to keep things out of her mouth as much as possible but it seems like nothing helps. I am afraid we are on the way to tubes. Any advice to keep these infections at bay?
Re: ear infections
Does DD go to DC? What has Dr been prescribing? Amoxocillan? Z-pack? It sounds to me like maybe the infection hasn't ever actually cleared up.
I know there is a series of shots LO can get if the amox and z-pack don't work, but I don't recall the name.
We are getting tubes in 2 weeks, and I couldn't be happier. It will make us ALL happier
Same story for us. 3 ear infections then a throat infection (Strep suspect) in 9 weeks.
I think the ear infections are gone now that I have told daycare the LO MUST sit up right to drink her bottle since I know she can do it at home. LO had convinced her teachers to allow her to really recline while she held her own bottle...as in maybe a 45 degree angle off the ground at the very very most and that's probably giving her the benefit of the doubt. Since then, no ear infections (2 weeks since I told daycare to sit her up right) just this sore throat that's gone on 12 days and counting now (but it's going around daycare like this too)...So I would check how reclined your LO is while eating and try to push her up right just a little bit more.
Good luck! The only thing I can think of that you didn't mention is keeping water out of her ears during bath times which was the source of our very first ear infection at 3 months old.
Ear infections don't necessarily come on because of colds. A runny nose can also be allergies. My oldest son poor thing, has had 3 sets of tubes. Every Fall when his allergies kick in his ears would start to drain. The first two sets fell out and the third they put in are permanent.
My middle son has had a set of tubes too. He got them when he was 11 months old. His ear infections were due to RSV, bronchitis and pneumonia. All of that fluid build up caused major ear infections. He ended up on Rocephin shots for a week before getting tubes in his ears.
Z got tubes last month. He had recurrent ear infections which affected his hearing. He'd have an ear infection with no sinus symptoms what so ever. His first infection was found when I took him in for his 2 month well baby appointment. He had an ear infection every two weeks after that.
To help prevent ear infections you would have to know the cause of them. Sometimes they are brought on by colds and sometimes allergies. Sometimes you just don't realize they have an ear infection and there's no noticeable cause. Some ear infections are bacterial but others can be viral. That's why antibiotics don't always work to clear them up. Some people have tried taking their babies to chiropractors to help drain the fluid. I did this with Z and it didn't work. That's why we ended up getting tubes for him. Tubes did wonders for his brothers so it was a method that I trusted.
I'd speak with your Pedi and ask for a referral to a ENT/Allergist. Hope your DD feels better soon! Sick babies aren't fun!
My DD has had constant ear infections since September...the fluid never clears. She is getting tubes on Friday and I'm so glad. I can't imagine how much pain she's been in the last 3 months, poor little thing.
I don't think that you can prevent these things sometimes. My DD just has small tubes that aren't draining (She has always had a small head, 12th percentile the last well child check!) I also had a lot of infections as a kid so it might be hereditary.
GL, I hope your DD feels better soon and stays healthy!
