Moving to Houston

Hi ladies,

My DH and I are planning on moving to Houston within the next six months after completing some classes. We live in Atlanta, but the DH family all lives in TX. I have visited a couple of times, but I am at a loss as far as actually living there. I wanted to see if you all could give me some advice as to good areas to buy a house? the job market? daycare cost and anything else.

TIA

Re: Moving to Houston

  • Welcome!

Houston is HUGE - so if you have any inkling whatsoever of what area you will be looking into, then that will help a lot.  Also, I am not sure if any of you are transferring jobs or looking for new jobs - letting us know a general line of work you are in can help us give you some job recs.  Most of the "typical" jobs are downtown, Galleria area, Westchase, etc. - but depending on the field, there are other areas, as well.  (For instance, if you are a teacher, obviously, there are schools everywhere).

I would say full time daycare ranges anywhere from $700-$1,500+ a month - just depends on where you are and what you want to spend.  Again - a lot of it deals with what location you will be living, as well.  Houston is very much a commuter city, so what area you work will probably determine a radius of where you will live, as well.

  • You also might want to consider posting your details to our Nest Houston site - as there are a lot more people that check that board, and can give you more recs.
  • Katie or Kingswood? I believe those are the areas that I've heard my DH mention. He is going to school for IT if that helps.

    Thanks again!

Katy is on the way West side - farther from downtown, but closer to say, Galleria or Westchase area.  Kingwood is Northeast and 59 is typcially a good freeway to come into downtown on.  Not sure about IT jobs, since it's not my field.  If you are looking for houses, you can use www.har.com to help narrow down your area.

  • I live Katy and moved here about a year ago from Canada.  Like you, I had NO idea where to begin looking and so we consulted with our realtor and decided Katy was the best choice (great schools, family oriented, good location).  It's really only about 15 or 20 minutes to the Galleria area and is full of family.  We narrowed it down to Cinco Ranch and couldn't be happier.  Best of luck!  HAR.com is a great tool as well...
  • Funny coincidence. My DH and I are planning to move to Houston in June '11 just after our baby comes and I finish up school in May. I am originally from Sugar Land, TX (suburb just southwest of Houston). Specifically in an area called First Colony. Nice schools (I like to think I was well educated anyway Wink ), mall and shopping centers, quite a few wonderful parks, and it seems that in the past 4 years that I have been gone there has been quite an increase in family centered community events in the Sugar Land Town Square. It's about a 30 min drive to downtown Houston and right outside of the SW Houston area. I went to highschool, church, and a number of other things in the city. Good luck on your search!
