How much does/did your 15 month old "talk"

Did your 15 month old talk, what kinds of words, how many.

My daughter does not talk at all, does say sounds like mama baba, etc - but not as words, just as sounds.

Today, at her 15 month appointment - the dr was concerned.

Just curious about everyone here.  If you or your doc were concerned, did you call EI, did you have any services?

Re: How much does/did your 15 month old "talk"

  • My kids didn't talk at all until a week before their 15m appt. Then they had a mini language explosion--by the time of the appt, Alex had 3 words and Will had 6. They doubled that within the next week and by 18m they each had about 50 words. I don't think it hurts to call EI and have her evaluated--until right before their appt, I was planning to ask the dr about that--but she might end up surprising you.

  • DD is just over 15 months.  She has 15-20 words that she uses daily.

    Words like:

    More

    Kitty

    Car

    Water "wa wa"

    Momma

    Dada

    Ball

    Teddy (her bear)   etc ....

If my doctor had a concern I would not hesitate for a moment to get her set up with EI or any services that the Dr. might suggest.

  • At her 15 month appointment, DD had one word - dada. Other than that it's all babble. She'll be 16 months tomorrow and only has 2 (maybe 3) words. She has been getting speech through EI for a couple months. I'm not sure if it's really helping though, or if she wouldve been getting to this point on her own anyway?

  • My 15 mo DD is much like yours.  This weekend she finally started to attempt to say some words.  Our dr. said as long as she is progressing she is ok, she understands most of what we say.  If we tell her to go to her chair, she does, or time to change diaper she goes her room, etc.  Dr. said that she seems to be taking it all in, but does expect some words by her 18 month appt in Feb/Mar.
  • Hi Amy!

How are you?  haven't seen you in a long time.

Does your DD understand you?  if you ask her questions?  where things are?

DD had 3 words at 15mths - Mama, Dada and Moo and she doesn't have many more now.  She will occassionally come out with something then we don't hear it again.  She babbles non stop and in her own little language is running sentences together but not many actual words.

DH is worried but honestly I'm not.  She udnerstands everything I ask and say to her, if she didn't then I'd be concerned, I think part of it is that I read her mine a lot of the time and so she doens't have to talk!

  • DD has around 15 words but she just had a word explosion recently. A few weeks ago she only said dada and mama so it can change quickly! My niece didn't say anything until 18 months then suddenly started saying tons.
  • DS pretty much just says "mama" "dada" "uh oh" and "ah-dah" (all done).  Then he has his own language of constant babbling and pointing and I have no idea what he's trying to say, lol.

  • DD is 16 months old today, and she has no words, not even mama or dada.  We had her evaluated at 12 months because she wasn't babbling yet, and she's been in an infant stimulation program through EI.  She has a severe expressive language delay, and she uttered her first syllable, de, at 13 1/2 months.  The plan is to transition her into a speech therapy group early next year.
  • At Luke's 15 month appointment he only said mama and dada.  Our doctor was also a bit concerned.  She wants to wait until 18 months though until any intervention.  Since his appointment, he's starting saying cat and dog.  So hopefully he'll start saying even more.  But we will just have to wait and see.

  • At 15 months, DD only had Ma and Dada.  She babbles constantly, but those were the only real words.  In the last few weeks she's added Hey, Bye, and Mmuuhh (milk.)   She is able to show us what she wants, and is meeting all of her other milestones so I haven't been that worried.  (I was more worried that I wasn't teaching her things properly instead of her not being able to get it.)
  • DS has 8 words.

    J - 9/6/09 L and A - 1/17/12
  • DD will be 15 months on wed and has 5 words - mama, dada, kitty, avor (sp? - it's portuguese for grandma) and no. she babbles all the time, like she's talking to you and you can understand everything she's saying. she understands what we say to her. i feel like she's on the verge of a word explosion, just not quite there yet.

  • DD is 15 months next week and has 7 words.

  • DS doesn't really have any real words.  He says "ba" for balloon, and a k sound for kitty.  He says mama and dada too but not specifically towards DH or I all the time.  He understands and follows a few commands.  He had his 15 month appointment today and the pedi said to give him until 18 months.  I wouldn't hesitate to get DS EI if I thought he needed it, but I think he is just a slow talker.  I'll be concerned at 18 months if he hasn't gotten any father.
  • Neither one of my boys had any appreciable words at the 15 month appointment.  My older son started to talk around 20 months and now at 3.5 has typical speech and language skills.

My younger son still has only a few words (at 22 months) and we have engaged a speech therapist and some others to help his communication skills along.

At 15 months, my doctor was not concerned about either boy.  They were hitting all other milestones on time and behavoirally were on track as well.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • She babbles a lot but only says 5 "words": mamma, ahmma (daddy), ah-bah (water in spanish, agua), bah-bah (dog) and Dora (yes.. for Dora the explorer). She also says uh-oh a lot
  • DS said nothing (and I really mean NOTHING) besides dada until he hit 18 months. He babbled constantly and could understand anything we said to him but just didn't say anything. Once he hit 18 months he had a huge word explosion and now has about 150-175 words. Our pedi wasn't concerned b/c he was babbling and had word recognition so we didn't pursue EI but would have at 18 months if he didn't ahve that word explosion.

  • At 15 months, DS said mama and dada, but little else.  However, he understood everything we said, followed many different commands, knew all his body parts, etc.  Also, his babbling was getting more complex, with new consonants and vowels.

He's 16 months, and he now says daddy, mommy, teeth, hat, and hi.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • My DD is 15 months and has 5 words. I feel like although EI is a great resource a lot of doc's really jump the gun on things as well as parents. I had a long chat with EI because my DD who is 15 months is not walking. From what EI said is if they are making progress for DD this was not standing at all at 12 months to fully cruising and walking with a push walker if they are only on the verge of being more on the slow side of normal you can put off getting an EI evaluation. I would listen to your ped, but also go with your gut as well and maybe wait a few weeks and see how things are progressing.
