Car Seat Question

Hi Ladies!

You guys seem to be very knowledgable on car seats, so I have a few questions for you.  My LO turns 1 in a couple of weeks and I am trying to decide when I should turn his seat around. I know you can do it when they turn 1, but I've also heard it's better to wait until they are older.  So to my questions:

1.  Do you know if it is better to wait to turn them around until they are a little older?  (I was thinking maybe after winter was over)

2.  When did you turn yours around (or planning to turn it front facing)?

3.  Did you talk to your Dr before you went to front facing?

Thanks in advance!

It is better to rear face until they outgrow the rear facing limits on your car seat. The AAP recommends until AT LEAST 2 years old.

    2.  When did you turn yours around (or planning to turn it front facing)?

She's still rear facing, and will be until she outgrows the her seat for rear facing.

    3.  Did you talk to your Dr before you went to front facing?

No. But I am a CPST (child passenger safety technician) and our pedi knows this about me. She calls me with car seat questions from time to time, because she knows I'm more in the know with the latest and greatest in the car seat world.

    Thanks in advance!

Children in Sweden rear face until a minimum of age 4. American parents are, generally speaking, in this huge rush to turn their kids. Some of it is probably lack of education, but children are 500% safer in a crash if they are rear facing. They can cross their legs or hang them over the side. There has never, not once been an incident of a broken leg because of ERF (extended rear facing). But even if the incidence of broken legs was higher, it's fixable. Broken necks, snapped spinal cords and internal decapitation mean death.

  • Thank You!  This is exactly what I was wondering.  I am not in any hurry to turn him around because safety is much more important.  I just looked up my car seat and he is able to stay rear facing until 35 lbs.  With all the snow and bad drivers, he is definitely staying rear facing for awhile!

you're welcome. Make sure you watch his height though too. Many (if not most) seats are outgrown by height before weight. :)

  • Just wanted to chime in and say that my little guy just turned 2 and is still rear facing.  And he is really happy with it.  He knows that is just the way it is and is comfortable and loves his seat.

I think he'll be able to be rear facing for at least another year, and I have a feeling he will definitely outgrow it because of his height rather than weight.
