Hi everyone,
I'm a first grade teacher and almost 12 weeks along. I was wondering what your thoughts were on how or when to tell my first grade students and parents. I don't want to just wait until they ask why I'm getting fat. I'm excited to let them know and share the experience with them. Your advice is appreciated.
Re: Looking for advice on how to tell students and parents
I read my kids the book My Teacher is Having a Baby by Eve Bunting (I think). It opened up some discussion and then I just sent a note home to parents telling then I shared the news in case there were questions or concerns from their children.
I told my advisees around 20 weeks and let them spread the word:) I teach 8th grade, so pretty soon all of the kids and all of their parents knew.
For younger kids, I think I'd just tell them, then send it home in a letter with your maternity plans. That's what parents want to know about anyway.
When I was student teaching in 1st grade, my mentor teacher (who was the newly pregnant one) showed her ultrasound picture up on the projector and just told the kids. Honestly, none of them really cared or were that suprised (probably because they are so young, they parents are still having babies left and right).
She did this right before fall break, that way the kids could go home, tell their parents, and have time for it to sink in.
With DD, after my 13 week appt, I gave my second graders and anagram that they had to figure out. It spelled out "Mrs. B. is having a baby!" and they loved it.
When I found out the sex, they had cupcakes on their desks with pink sprinkles that said "it's a girl".
My class had a great time with it. We collected data on if it would be a boy or girl, what names they liked, etc. The parents threw me a baby shower at the end of the year too. I really enjoyed sharing all of that with my kids.
This time, I will wait until after 13 weeks as well. I will tell them some time after winter break.
