Bad rash...help please!

DS came up with a pretty nasty diaper rash starting yesterday and I have been putting desitin on at basically every diaper change.  It seemed to get a little better, but after a dirty diaper just a bit ago, it looks horrible.  Some spots look like they have been rubbed raw, and now there are bumps.  One little spot looks like the bumps got rubbed and there was a little bit of blood.  It seems to be covering a lot of area, including some areas on his boy parts and the folds around there and on his actual butt.  Anyone have any experience with this.  Desitin isn't doing the trick.  I am tempted to call the nurse line or possibly take him into the dr tomorrow. I feel like such an idiot, but he has never had a rash anything like this.  TIA

    Dr Smith's Diaper ointment cream does the trick for us. They don't carry it at a lot of pharmacies, but walgreens will order it for you. It is the only thing that works for ds when he gets a rash. Our pediatrician told us about it. It is a little more expensive so they don't stock it. We tried boudreaux's butt paste, desitin, johnson and johnson, and every other cream out there and this is the best one by far.

    I've recently found out that if the cream isn't working, it may be something else.  What you are describing is similar to what my daughter has right now - yeast infection.  We just had to call the doctors' office and they called in a script for my daughter.  Unfortunately, this is a wicked case of it and she is now on oral medications as well after a visit to the doctors office when the first script didn't work.  In person, they may check for a bacterial infection or strep as well.  Good luck!  It's hard to see your LO go through it. :(

    I'm dealing with this right now too. His poops are different than normal- much more watery and very frequent. So, I just tried maalox on it. I put some on a cotton ball and dabbed it right on the red spots.

    I also did a mix of Desitin, aquaphor and maalox. I mixed it up very well and put it in a tupperware. DH has him out right now, but when he gets home I'm going to try it.

    I agree that it might be a yeast infection.  Your pedi can call in an Rx for  Nystatin (sp?)  You can also try Aquafor as a barrier.  There is also a prescription that mixes Aquafor and cholestramine compounded together.  It is a barrier and a healing ointment.  It also keeps the uric acid from causing any more damage.

    I would let him run around without a diaper on as much as possible. Just put a sheet and some towels down on the floor, and be prepared to clean up a mess. Stick out tongue

    We are going through something similar.  Per recommendation of a friend's pedi, we have mixed up a concoction of equal amounts diaper rash cream (desitin), an anti fungal cream, and cortizone.  It has been amazing.  The rash was getting worse and worse with just the desitin, but this has all but cleared it up.
