What are your costs? Any recommendations on the cheapest way to go?

It seems like a big set-up cost to get cloth or gDiapers which I understand would be a one time cost (until we need the next size diaper cover/gPant) and when I compare the cost of gDiaper refills to a comparable quantity of hypoallergenic disposables, the disposables still come out a tad bit cheaper.

Can the gPants be hand-me downs? (I know someone whose daughter wore these and she is 9 months ahead of us so I could maybe ask for them and pay half what the original cost was) They are washable right? I guess I would need to see one up close to understand what parts are disposable and which parts are not.

I know it's really not that much to start up but it seems like a TON of money for someone who supports themselves and a child on $1400 a month so I would just like a little bit of a cost analysis, so to speak, from the moms who have used cloth or gDiapers and/or hypoallergenic diapers such as Seventh generation or Earth's best.

We slowly built up our stash over time. We bought a few every week until we had enough to CD full time. You can find great deals on gently used diapers. I would suggest getting the one size diapers so you would never have to replace your stash once your lo goes up a size. You just resize the diapers using the snaps.

I do not recommend gdiapers. They were very leaky for us, but my lo has a skinny waist and legs.

Once you get a stash large enough to go ft it's awesome! I never have to worry about buying diapers and the laundry really isn't an issue for me.

most people hate gdiapers and they are also most expensive.

Prefolds are super cheap. You can buy them all, plus covers, for well under 100.

I got 24 BumGenius one-size pocket diapers for around $330. They fit from 8-35 lbs, so I won't need any more until we have baby #2 and need newborn ones. These should last until potty training, I may need a set of toddler sized ones, but hopefully not. If you're using disposable inserts, you may as well just stick with disposable diapers IMO. Cost-wise, like you said, it doesn't make a difference. I've tried a few different brands of disposables (including naturals and allergy-friendly) and they all give him a rash. I have one small pack in his size for emergencies (like his diapers aren't dry yet and he pees in the last clean one, lol), but I get him back in cloth asap. Yeah, gDiapers suck IMO. I have gDiapers, BumGenius, GroBaby, and FuzziBunz, and the g's are by far my least favorite. Plus, if you are planning to use the disposable insert, it's going to be more expensive than regular diapers. Not worth it.

If you want to be economical, as others have said, get prefolds and covers. It will save you a ton of money, and if your baby has sensitive skin you can get organics.

We spent about $500 total on diapers to fit him through potty learning. We could have spent less but I kept buying. We did buy some used on Spots Corner on hyena cart and I bought a few each week so it wasn't a one time cost. We have a couple G diapers and I don't like them much. I much prefer my pockets and AIO's. If you want pocket or aio'sere are a few options that could get you into cloth for under $300 if you were willing to wash every other day. I have 24 diapers but you could probably get away with 12-18. We are currently using gDiapers and haven't had any issues with leaking - unless I do something wrong with them on accident (don't make sure the cloth is tucked in all the way, don't tighten them enough around Bryce's waist). I know that they have mixed reviews but we like them. We have 2 sets of the gcloth, one set of gerber cloth diapers that we use as cloth liners for back ups, 5-6 plastic liners, and 3 covers that we use right now - we spent a little over $100 for start up cost - this was brand new. We do have to do laundry every 2-3 days for them. But I was told that the Flip system is very similar - and that they are one size so you won't have to go up like you would with the gDiapers. We got a couple of the Flips for LO for Christmas to try out. The gDiapers have an outside cover, a white plastic liner, and then the cloth or disposable insert that you can use. The cloth/disposable liner is the only thing that you have to change every time - unless LO poops and it gets on the white plastic liner - then you have to change that as well. He rarely gets it on the outside cover though - so you may want to get an extra set of the white liners too. The Flip diapers are similar - but they don't have the white plastic liner. You can remove the cover between changes, set it to the side to air dry - and put on a different diaper. Once you go to change LO again - you swap out the previous cover with a new cloth liner. I hope that makes sense. I looked at videos on youtube to help me decide which CDs we wanted to use since I was very confused with all of the different types. I think they are a lot like disposables though - where it depends on the shape of your LO for what works best.

My initial cloth diaper stash only cost me $378. That was for 18 diapers, a diaper pail (lidded trash can), pail liner, wet bag, 2 rolls of flushable liners and diaper detergent. I hit up www.retailmenot.com, looked up cloth diaper websites and took advantage of their coupon codes. I shopped at 2 different places, Kelly's Closet and Thanks Mama. I got bumGenius one size pocket diapers which will grow with him to about 35 pounds. Since then I have spent maybe $50 more. I've added fitted diapers and covers and I've switched detergents. I wash every other day and our water bill has not gone up.

I have Mother Ease Sandy's Fitteds- Google Mother Ease Diapers and check out their site.

The diapers are around 12 a piece. you would only need the size for the 20-35lbers and we have 18 and we wash every other day or every 3rd day and we have 3 Thirsties covers.

They are work horse diapers and this is the 2nd child they've been through and they could def go through another.

We've spent about $300 total and that is from birth to potty training

We've had very few leaks (like 2) and they are SO economical.

I have a few BumGenius 3.0s andT love them. I have several pockets that I bought new on Ebay. Some diapers were as low as $1.00 with $4.00 for shipping. These are great diapers. The shipping can take a bit because the majority are shipped overseas.

You can cloth diaper for less. gDiapers are actually more expensive that disposables. All of my diapers are one size which means they will fit until 35 pounds or so. Prefolds are a much cheaper way to start.

Also, buy used if they are in good condition. They are washable. I look on Craigs List and find great deals. I have found more than one that is brand new with tags for pennies on the dollar.

Thank You so much Mommas! This is a ton of information and it looks like I've got a lot of searching and reading to do before I make a decision. I'll be talking to LO's doctor again today about the rash and see what he says about diapering options and if we need to switch to cloth.
