Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Would you put your LO in used shoes?

We have a bag of hand-me-downs and there are 2 pairs of barely worn Stride Rite's in the shoe size LO is about to grow into.  Would you use them, or because another LO's foot inprinted on them would you just buy your LO new shoes and toss the used ones?

Re: Would you put your LO in used shoes?

  • Heck yes!  Most of DD's shoes are very gently worn.  They outgrow them so fast - I can't afford to buy new shoes every couple of months.

  • If I thought they were cute and in good condition heck yes I would.

  • Yes! My Bff has two boys and she always gives us the hand me downs. Those Stride Rite's last forever and they grow out of them so fast they are practically brand new.

  • no...my kids don't wear hand me down anything really, but used shoes just seem icky.

  • The two pairs of shoes that Evelyn wears the most (okay, one's a pair of boots that I absolutely LOVE on her!!) are second-hand. In fact, I've probably bought her 3 or 4 pairs of brand new shoes over the course of her life, and I've never liked them nearly as much as the ones I've got from consignment shops or for free.
  • I honestly probably wouldn't. I have a big thing about wearing other peoples shoes. It just grosses me out. I wouldn't even wear someone elses shoes. I have nothing against other people doing it if they want, but it just isn't for me.

  • Hmm Yeah, of course.

  • I've gotten a bunch of pairs from my friend's daughter and they work great. They're barely used since they get outgrown so quickly.
  • Seriously? You say they are in great condition.  I don't think it should even be a question.  They are baby feet, not stinky, smelly, man feet.  You'd be crazy not to let LO wear them.

  • Yes. DS just received his first pair of new shoes last month. He's worn gently-used hand-me-down shoes from friends that were in good condition since he began walking.
  • Yes, i would

  • Yeah, if there in good condition, and especially if I knew where they came from, I would.  I would be more hesitant if I didn't know the previous owners.
  • I am so surprised some people say no! Colin has 5 pairs he wears regularly and not one was purchased new. There is no way I am spending $50 on a pair of new stride-rites when I can get a pair for less than half that.
  • all our shoes are used.

my son is currently wearing a pair of converse all-stars that i bought for $3 at Kid2Kid.  My DD is wearing a pair of StrideRites that I got a mom's of multiples garage sale for $4.  You would never know they were used - i only buy used shoes when they are in good condition.

    Yes

  • Cedric wears hand-me-down shoes from my friend.  I have no problem with it.

  • If they were in good condition, sure. He'd be wearing socks with them, and if nothing else I could throw them in the washer first. It's not like used underwear, FFS. Kids wear shoes for so little time they don't have a chance to really form the soles much.

I've been considering getting B some Converse from Once Upon a Child, since I've seen a few pairs there. I'd rather pay $5 than $25 and find out he hates them or can take them off easily.

  • Absolutely, 90% of LO's clothes are hand me downs.  We have a friend with a son 1.5 yrs older than LO and they have been extremely generous to us!   Like many pp's said at this age they grow out of their shoes SO fast that they don't have time to become worn out!
  • Yep.  I got DD's black dress shoes for Christmas from Once Upon A Child for $1.50, and I have no regrets!
  • Would and do. His sneaks are new, all others are used. And his sneakers are new only because I couldn't find used stride rites (or equvilent) I liked in his size...

You know that someone owned the shoes new before you are buying them used, right? And this surprises you? Hmm

Shocker, I buy my kids new shoes. lol

  • A lot - maybe 75%? - of DD's clothes are hand me downs or bought second hand.   Heck, a lot of MY clothes are second hand.  But, I'm kind of picky about used shoes.  It's completely irrational, but that's the way it is.  If they were really, really close to untouched, then I think I could be OK with it.
  • Yes, if I either knew who they came from (DD has tons from her cousin) or they were shoes that she'd always use socks in.  Used sandals make me feel squicky.

  • Erino, come on.  You're retiring at 40, you can spring for a new pair of Robeez!   Wink

(Yes, I have gotten used shoes for DS.  I make sure to clean them thoroughly because he had MRSA and now I'm a germaphobe, but yeah, he's had about five or six pair of shoes that were hand-me-downs or from OUAC)

  • I have no problem with putting my child in gently used shoes. I don't think it will last too much longer though. As they get older, kids are pretty hard on their shoes.

  • If it was a good friend, maybe.  I'd never buy used shoes though.  I his shoes from Target or Kohls and don't buy a bunch of them, so I just buy new.
  • Absolutely.
