Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4-month-old and Stomach Flu

Hey y'all... I come in desperation...

So Friday my LO started vomiting and then he had a diarrhea diaper that evening. No fever, but I was concerned because he'd been refusing his bottle for about 7 hours at that point. We called the nurse's exchange and they had us take him to the ER as a precaution for dehydration.

He was fine, they just said he had the stomach flu. They gave us a couple of samples of Pedialyte and said to give him .5oz every half hour or so until he was keeping it down.

But he was STARVING. And he hadn't vomited in so long that I tried giving him his bottle. He took it, but all day yesterday he had diarrhea after diarrhea.

I just don't know what to do? He doesn't seem dehydrated but I'm afraid to keep giving him formula because he has pooped all over everything. The poop, y'all, it's taking over. But the Pedialyte alone doesn't seem to satisfy him.

Help? I feel like a horrible momma. Aside from the diarrhea, he isn't acting sick... still adorably giggly and all smiles. I just want my sweet little baby to get well :(

Re: 4-month-old and Stomach Flu

  • Are the poops frothy and really really smelly (more than normal)? DD had Rotavirus at 4 months and it lasted for almost 2 weeks of diarrhea. We had to cut her forumla bottles 1/2 pedilyte and 1/2 formula. This way she was getting some calories and the pedialyte was keeping her from getting dehydrated. I would try that, also you may want to call your Dr to make sure they won't want to test for any bacteria infection causing the prolonged diarrhea.

  • Oh gosh, two weeks? Poor baby!

Right now it's just suuuuper runny and green, I don't think frothy? Hopefully the diarrhea will wane a bit today. If not, I'm definitely taking him to the pedi tomorrow.

But for now I think I will try half formula and half Pedialyte, that's a really good idea, thanks!
