Discoloration on front tooth...

Today I noticed a small discoloration spot on DS' front tooth - I got sick to my stomach....I immediately googled it and now I am thinking the worst that he has a cavity and his tooth is rotting.... I have never noticed it before...we brush 2x's day for as long as he will sit still.  Today I brushed his teeth with baking soda to see it I could scrub the stain off with no such luck :(  I am hoping it goes away or is nothing but I am freaking out!

Re: Discoloration on front tooth...

  • Time for a trip to the dentist to rule out a cavity.  What color is the stain?  Sometimes, kids will fall or bump their mouth and a tooth will "die".  The tooth will then change color and turn like a bluish gray.  There is nothing that can or should be done for the tooth unless a boil or pimple appears on the gum above the tooth.

Get it checked by a dentist to be on the safe side.

  • What color is the tooth?  DS has spots on a few of his teeth (can't remember the name of them, sorry!)  where they look more ivory than white.  I was told they developed before birth and are soft spots on the enamel.  Our dentist just told us to make sure to brush them and eventually they'd probably do a sealent to protect them.

Is the tooth grey or yellow?  Is it the whole tooth or a spot?

  • If you look closely at my pic below, DS has a "grey tooth".  I freaked out when I noticed it and called the pedi who sent us to the dentist.  The dentist looked at it and took x-rays and said he likely bumped it at some point and that it might get lighter or darker, but there was no permanent damage to the tooth and the adult tooth behind it is fine.  Unfortunatly my poor baby will have "grey tooth pictures" for a couple of years until that tooth falls out.

P.S. He did great at the pediatric dentist - wants to go back...LOL - he thought it was great that they "tickled" his teeth!

  • THanks - the spot is just a small spot on bottom that looks yellowish/light light brownish - we will be making a trip to the dentist soon - until then he is getting extra brushings!
  • I had this on my bottom teeth as a child... for me it actually was a reaction to some medication I had taken as a child.  It was a small yellow dot right in the middle of my bottom front teeth.  My friend's daughter has it, they told her it was due to medication she had taken during pregnancy... odd! Definitely check it out with a Dentist.  GL!
