I fvcking HATE baby hiccups!!!

Paige had the hiccups pretty regularly as an inside baby. She obviously didn't like them then because she would move around a lot when she had them. I too hated them because they just felt funny in my vag.

Now as an outside baby, she has them ALL THE FVCKING TIME! And they piss her off which pisses me off.

I burp her during and after feedings and she still gets them. She will get the in between feedings too. And they aren't little hiccups. These sound like a grown persons. And they wake her up! When she wakes up she fusses because she hates them. Paige is EBF so I know it's not because there is "air in the bottle"

Someone mentioned that Gripe Water can get rid of them. How true is this? I don't want to give her something that just won't work.

If you have a LO dealing with this issue, how do you address it? Does your baby fuss as much as Paige?

  • Sorry, I can't help (inside baby still)... but you're worrying me because my LO sure gets the hiccups on a regular basis and I guess this is what I have to look forward to.

Sorry. I don't mean to worry you. It's just annoying because it seems like the only time this little girl is fussy is when she has the hiccups. I can put her in a boob coma and once the hiccups start she wakes up and wants to eat again even if she nursed for an hour. It's just frustrating as hell because she sounds so pitiful when she has them.

  • Law gets them all the time too :-( He gets so mad. I would love to know if gripe water helps.

  • Awww poor Paige! Yes, Gripe water is supposed to help hiccups, but I've never tried it. As for air in her belly, BF babies can still get it by swallowing air as they nurse. Try changing the position she eats in (if she'll let you). I'm sorry, Momma. I know it's frustrating!

We've tried changing positions. Yesterday we did football hold, laying down, cradle. Ugh. What sucks is that I can't get comfortable for some of them because of the tear. I hate sitting funny it's not at all helpful when BFing Paige.

I've latched and re-latch her when she slides on-to just the nipple. I know they don't 'hurt' her but this is the only real issue we are having. I guess I should consider myself lucky if hiccups are our only worry.

I have no idea how to help with baby hiccups. Conner would occasionally get them but he didn't seem to mind. Hopefully they calm down for ya'll soon!

One of the website that google brings up suggests this or blowing in their face. Tried and Failed. Mr.MM is being awesome with just holding her through them but I don't want her to get used to that. I just want to get rid of them.

Aww, I totally forgot about that. Sad Try the Gripe water. Its totally natural (basically ginger and charcoal to settle their stomach) so if it doesn't work, it won't hurt her either.

  • I only know about inside baby hiccups, so I am probably not very helpful. But, in Happiest Baby on the Block he mentions that babies will continue to get hiccups for the first month after they are born (especially if they had them when they were in the womb) and they will then taper off as their systems develop a little more.

  • I found gripe water at target, right next to the infant mylicon. I bought both but haven't tried the gripe water yet.

I know our Target has it because my sister had to pick some up. It's expensive, like $10 for a little bottle but it's worth it if it means she doesn't wake up pissed off because of them.

  • Wait, I'm sorry. It wasn't WalMart - it was Target. I found it on an end cap in the pharmacy section, but I would guess it normally lives in the tummy troubles section (where you'd find the Pepto). Some Targets have a baby medication section (mine doesn't) and it could be there too.

Though, ask at the pharmacy at WalMart. You never know.

    Hope you find some!!

  • No advice here, but Alec had hiccups ALL the time while I was pregnant.  He gets them even more often now, but they don't seem to bother him at all.  I feel bad for him, though, because he'll wake himself up with them.
  • Okay, so do you give the gripe water AFTER they get the hiccups or do you give it to them after a feeding?

    imagelaura101:

GRIPE WATER IS A MIRACLE SOLUTION!!! You are supposed to give them 2.5 mL but most of the time I don't even need to give Koen that. Sometimes it only take 0.5 mL to get rid of his hiccups. He gets them bad too, and makes him sick sometimes. You can buy Gripe water with or without Alcohol. I have it WITHOUT. It is amazing and gets rid of his hiccups 100% of the time, immediately. It is only Sodium Bicarbonate so you dont need to worry that you are giving him/her anything bad.

Good Luck! Let me know how it goes. Can you guys buy Gripe water in the States? My parents used to own a hunting and fishing resort and our guests that would come up to Canada would ask us to pick up Gripe water for them because they couldnt get it at home.

    I am trying it today.

I had to order it online-I never saw any in Target, Wal-Mart, etc...

    Maybe I can try Walgreens?

Our Wal-Mart carries Gripe Water... In the Medicine isle.

After they get the hiccups Loves. Does she get them after every feeding?

Not every one but most of them. And she gets them in between feedings like 2-3 times. It's just tiresome.

  • baby hiccups are the worst!!!   :(  I've heard a tiny bit of gripe water works for some babies, and just doesn't work for others but it's totally worth a shot!  the only thing I would do for the boy I nanny when he was an infant (he'd get them in the middle of feedings and not wanna eat more until they were gone) I'd sit him up and lean him forward a big and just rub his back in circles.  I have no idea if that works on all babies or why it worked on him, but it did.  good luck!

oh and this one is even weirder, but I'll mention it.. my friend took to "scaring the hiccups away" by looking at her baby and then making a crazy gasping sound.  I dunno.  I saw it work once or twice, but it's kinda weird. haha.  worth a shot?

  • We use Colic Calm when Sam gets the hiccups.  (bought at CVS) Its Gripe Water too.  It works wonders.

  • Cooper gets them about 8 times a day which is about the same as when he was in my belly. We let him hiccup it out. The dr said that he'll slowly grow out of it as he gets bigger. Cooper has a big burping issue..as in he just doesn't. We have to work hard to get him to burp which sometimes makes him pretty cranky. We use gas drops, but not gripe water. Since he can get the gas drops everytime he feeds he can have it more frequently and seems to respond well to it.

  • My doctor said not to worry about them...Both OB while he was inside and the ped. They both said that it means the diaphragm is working well and they should taper off after a month or so.

We also use gripe water in Lainey's night time bottles. It helps calm her gas/hiccups. She gets hiccups after almost every feeding, but they don't bother her too much.

Hope you work out a good solution soon! I know that's got to be frustrating.

  • Gabrielle gets them a lot after feedings, I find she gets them more so when she has her frantic gulping feedings. She doesn't like them either, they piss her off. I try giving her her soother. If she gets sucking on it with a good rhythm they will usually stop.

  • Have you tried the "milkshake" burp method? Law absolutely will not burp any way but with that. I guess it's from Happiest Baby on the Block, but I hold his head against my chest with one hand and support his butt with my other arm, then bounce him up and down pretty quick. Not only does he love it (he likes bouncing over rocking) but it gets awesome burps out. I guess the guys theory is that it works the bubbles out of their stomachs... It works for us :-) Edit- sorry that was @ Chw... I'm such a newb.

  • Oh that sound horrible. Luke had hiccups all the time inside too, and gets them at least once a day now. But they don't bother him too much, I usually try and burp him when he gets them or bounce. Our pediatrician said that for hiccups and gas the best thing is vibrations.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having troubles with hiccups now that she's out.  Mine is still inside and is the same way.  Hiccups 2-3x/day at least.  I've been wondering if that will translate to lots of outside hiccups as well.  I've also heard grippe water is helpful and I bought some to have on hand. Unfortunately - I can't really tell you if it does work.

I hope you find something that does help and I will be watching for your answer.  Good luck!!

  • I ran to Target and bought some Gripe Water. When I got home, I fed her and burped her. Ten minutes later, hiccups that woke her up in fits. I gave her 1mL of the gripe water (Rec Dosage is 2.5mL)

THEY WERE GONE!!!! Now she's not pissy anymore. Granted, she's away but not fussing!

    Woot for Gripe Water!
