Sick and throwing up 2.5 year old - dr?

Lilah has only ever been sick one other time in her life, when she was six months old and throwing up for days.  They eventually had to give her i.v. fluids at the hospital.  So, of course she gets sick now, when she is at my in-laws' three hours away and it's only her second overnight away from home.  I guess she's been up since 1:00 throwing up and can't keep anything down, not even water.  She is resting now, and they are going to head back here as soon as she is up.

Would you call and get an appointment at the after-hours pedi?

I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.

  • Not yet.  It is just this nasty stomach bug going around.  Tell them to stop trying to give anything for an hour or two.  Then have then give her a couple tablespoons of water.  If it stays down for 20 minutes, then she can have more.  Once she starts keeping things down, get some pedialyte (store brand is cheaper and fine).

It's scary to think they will get dehydrated, but she will most likely be fine.

Disclaimer...Obviously, if they think something is really wrong, tell them to go to the ER.

Thank you.  I am usually pretty calm about illness, etc., but because she is so far away from me I'm in a bit of a panic mode.  They said she has no fever and are just giving her sips of water every 15 minutes at this point.  Of course, as the worry-wart momma, my mind jumps to all the horrible things it could be, like meningitis or influenza.  I'll feel much better when she is tucked in her own bed at home!  Thanks again for the reassurance.

I agree with this. There is a nasty stomach bug going around. Just last week two little girls at DS's in home daycare were sent home with it, DCP's 12 month old daughter got it, two of the daycare parents got it (different households), as well as one of the little girls school-age sister. Knock on wood that DS didn't get it, but I know its really going around. Hope your DD feels better soon.

  • We just went through this last week with DD.  It's probably just a nasty stomach virus (I have it now and I caught it from DD).  Thankfully the vomiting only lasted about 12 hours, but it took days for her to get back to normal.  Tell them not to give DC anything for a couple of hours.  My DD couldn't keep down water, so I gave her a little bit of ginger ale every 30 minutes.  After she was able to keep that down, I started giving her pedialyte.  The next day I started her on the BRAT (banana, rice, apple sauce and toast) diet.  Unfortunately she didn't want anything to eat for days, but she continued to drink ginger ale and pedialyte, so her pediatrician said she probably would not get dehydrated.  Last night was the first time since Tuesday that she came to us and asked for somethng to eat.  We gave her rice because we were still a little reluctant.  Today she ate breakfast though, and 3 hours later it has not come up or out in poop.  It's been a long 5 days, but I think she is finally back to normal.

  • Agree with pp's, I would wait till tomorrow morning and see how she does.  When DS had the stomach virus, my dr told me to try to give him vitamin water instead of pedyalite.  He said some kids won't drink it due to the taste and DS may be more likely to try the vitamin water.  It did help.

  • DS had that a couple of months ago and then I got it--it was horrible but only lasted about 48 hrs or so.

Dr recommended not giving water since that can cause neasea to some.  They said try just giving 1-2 tsp fulls at a time and see if they can keep it down.  Once I tried that, it helped.  We tried pedialyte but he will NOT drink that stuff no matter what--even tried the freeze pops.  I actually ended up using regular freeze pops which he likes---but also regular gatorade and even a little sprite or pepsi or whatever they like.  He doesn't drink pop so that was a treat and he WANTED to drink it---I watered it down like 80% though.

So try 1-2 tsp at a time.  Basically if they don't have any wet diapers for like 5 hrs or so, then call the dr.  And even if they send the child to the hospital for an IV, it's only for a couple hours.  Generally not overnight.  Hope your LO is better soon!
