Baby Names

how do you spell Orely?

I love the name, but the spelling looks odd. How do you spell it? The middlename might be Jocheved (Jo-CHe-ved - its hebrew). But we are not sold on either.

Re: how do you spell Orely?

  • Umm..I wouldn't name my child that because it sounds like orally. Plus, I've never heard the name before...

    What about Coralie?

  • Do you mean Aurelie? Or Orelie (rather archaic French name)? Or the boys' name Orell?

Can I suggest that inability to spell the name likely means you should keep looking? It really says something when you misspell your child's name.

She hasn't named her child yet. I assumed the intent of this post was to help with spelling of a name, not announce her child's name.

Yes, thank you, I think that I understood that. What I was suggesting is that considering her badly butchered attempt at a phonetic spelling--it's so obscure I'm not certain which of several names she might be proposing--that the name, whatever it is, is probably not the right choice for her. If she can't spell it or sound it out (which clearly she cannot) she should look elsewhere.

  • I should have mentioned that she will live in Israel with Hebrew speaking people and we are translating the name (if we choose it) from the Hebrew name  which sounds like Orelie for her American passport etc. But the spelling looks bad.

Perhaps she has seen the name spelled this way and was wondering if anyone had an alternative spelling. She never said she didn't know how to spell it. She asked how "you" would spell it.

    My point, ladies.

  • My old boss' name was Orly.  It was said exactly like it was spelt.

I think you are missing the point of what strangebird is saying ...

I think strangebird missed the point of the OP.

    This EXACTLY!

  • The only thing I've found is Oralee, which is supposed to be Hebrew, meaning 'my light'.
  • Aurelie.

Try putting a stronger emphasis on the -lie. Oh-ruh-LEE. But yeah, it's gonna sound like orally from the average Joe.

  • I knew someone named OR-lee, spelled orly.  Very pretty.

  • A gal in my moms' group has a son named that--pronounces it "OR-lee." I think they spell it Orli. I actually like it.

  • It is generally spelling Orly or Orli in English.

I think Orly is lovely Hebrew name.  I'm not into Yocheved though.
