Two Under 2

Anyone have a car/SUV recommendation?

I am in the market for a new car/SUV.  I currently have a Jeep Commander (which I absolutely hate).  The only way my infant seat fits properly in the back seat is to have the passenger seat pushed forward the whole way - which makes it impossible for anyone to ride in the passenger seat when I have the baby with me!

Therefore, I am looking for a nice car or SUV that will comfortably fit my entire family --- including what will soon be 2 car seats!

Any suggestions are welcome :)  TIA!  Have a great Friday!!

  • I also forgot to add that I am seriously considering the Ford Edge.  So any comments on that particular vehicle would be great as well!

  • I have a Saturn Vue which I like, but I really want to get a minivan.  The sliding doors would make life so much easier.  And right now we can't really take the dog and the babies (and their stuff) together so I'd like the third row.  And yes in my 20's I thought there was no way I'd ever drive a minivan.  Now that I'm older (37), it's all about convenience.  I know that doesn't really help answer your question, I just thought I'd throw it out there.
  • Chevy Tahoe or Suburban!  Upgraded from a Nissan Murano to the Suburban about a month ago...If you cant buy new...you can find pretty good deals on used ones with low mileage...used ones are pretty much the same as the new ones!  Tons of baby and cargo room...especially if you are thinking about more children like we are!  Good Luck!

  • I dont know anything about the Ford Edge. But we have a Toyota RAV4, and it is perfect for a family of 4. We have plenty of room for both car seats, plenty of room in the trunk for 2 strollers (a double and a single), a travel booster seat, plus anything else we need to shove back there.

But there would be no room for a third car seat (or even a third person) in the back seat between the two car seats. I wouldnt get the RAV4 if you plan on having more children though. (And I dont have any pets, but it might be too small if you are trying to go somewhere with animals too).

I drive the dreaded minivan. Yes, the sliding doors are amazing (you don't need to struggle with them and there's no chance your kid is going to throw them open and ding a car- bonus when you upgrade for the automatic doors and hatch (how moms live without this feature I don't know!)

I love my Stow and Go feature and that both kids seats (since they won't stow with car seats on them) have their own little bin of things- I can carry extra food, clothes, diapers, blankets, toys, games, etc. without ever grabbing a diaper bag.

Oh, and I'm in my 20s. I think that convenience is timeless- and much like I don't carry my DD around in 4 inch pumps with my hair perfectly blown out I have sacrificed looking sexy while driving for being able to get everyone and everything in and out the door quickly.

  • I bought a Honda Pilot 3 months ago because I'll have 2 under 2 so I needed lots of trunk space for a double stroller and room for 2 car seats, maybe 3 in the future. we looked at the edge and escape and the trunk space was just WAY too small for a double stroller so please look at that. Honda pilot has 3 rows which i keep the 3rd row down. it's awesome and there's so much room for groceries too!
  • we have a GMC terrain. It is great, big enough for car seats, booster and storage. No pushing the seats forward which was a huge concern of ours. My parents have a ford edge and the MPG is horrible! They are looking to trade it in ASAP. Other SUV we considered was the Equinox, almost the same as Terrain but little less finished and a little less expensive, not by much!

  • Are you looking for style, good gas mileage, convenience, cost...?

You may not want to hear it, but I really wish we had bought a mini-van when we only had two kids.    We didn't get it until we just about had three, but the convenience is awesome even for two kids.       We bought a Dodge Grand Caravan '10.   It really doesn't look that much different than the Journey.   We bought a black one - it's looks good.   It's good on fuel, has great features (power sliding doors/gate, power windows (even on the sliding doors), climate control for back and front, a decent sound system, touch screen for media center, stow and go,  etc. - you can pretty much get whatever you want and it's still not too badly priced).

I was very anti-minivan.......until we sucked it up and bought one.   I felt like we were signing our lives away when we bought it.  But, now I wish we would have gotten it sooner!   Weird....

  • I have a Chevy Traverse and I LOOOOVVVEEE it!  I have the model with 2 bucket seats and a third row that can be folded down flat, and I usually keep it that way, which provides a lot of space for strollers/groceries/etc....  It's nice to have a lot of extra room in the back for my family of 3-soon-to-be-4 because we hardly ever have more passengers than just us.  But if we do, we can always put the back seat up in a snap.

Even the basic model comes with On-Star, Bluetooth (which means hands-free phoning, yay!), Remote Start, and Remote Open on the back hatch.  I now can't imagine living without these functions.  I think Consumer Reports now ranks it as the #2 SUV choice behind the Buick Enclave...which is the same car, only with a few more features and a higher $.  If you are looking at the Edge, I would DEFINITELY suggest you check out the Traverse before buying.  They may have added even more features to the 2011 that I don't even know about!

  • I just traded in my Pontiac torrent ( which was great for 1 child) but I could barley fit two seats in the back etc. My hb wanted a mini van bad. So we got a Honda odessey. Mind you I'm in my early 20's and was very against this bc I wanted a tahoe bc that's the kinda girl I am. But I have to say I do not regret getting this van. I love it!! I can not say enough about it and how much room there is even with two kids.

  • We have had no problems with either an infant seat or convertible seat being rear facing in the middle or side seats with our VW Passat Wagon. Also, I find the trunk space on the wagon to be a lot larger than in an SUV. The Passat comes with a lot of nice features (sunroof, heated seats, roof racks) standard.

  • I have a nissan armada which is basically like a larger version of the xterra. its 3 row seats TONS of room and i have a captains chair in the middle so its not a bench seat which makes it nice with 2 car seats and people can still walk to the back instead of stepping on the seat.

  • I currently have an Edge, we boughtit when I was pregnant with our first. Love the car and the cargo space in back is pretty big, but it will be a tight squeeze for 2 carseats, our dog, and luggage when it comes time to travel. Conveniently, a month before we concieved, we bought a new (used) Escalade and love love love it! 2 captains chairs in the 2nd row and a third row and equipped with dvd player and all! We were originally looking for a Chevy Tahoe/ Suburban or GMC Yukon, but found this Escalade for a better deal! Highly recommend either!
