How to make bed sharing safe?

From PP I see I'm not the only one to buy a bassinet that LO will not sleep in. In bed next to me he doesn't even whimper. At least I get sleep when he's in bed but it's pretty bad because I'm scared of suffocation. Also LO ends up on his side unless swaddled and sometimes won't even sleep unless he's on his side or tummy. What have you done to make bed sharing safe? Is LO swaddled or under a blanket? What side does he sleep on?

Re: How to make bed sharing safe?

  • My BFF got a "snuggle nest" that keeps LO safe in bed with her and her DH. She loved it.

You can find this same thing on walmart.com for ALOT cheaper.  I think it is $35 and you can get free site to store shipping.  I also know from looking around the same thing is $47 at the Target near my house.  We have been planning on buying one but our car broke down and is costing an arm and a leg to fix so we are waiting until we get some extra money.

I thought those positioners were recalled? And I would not let LO sleep on side or tummy, espessially in bed with you!

This one is not actually a positioner.  It is similiar in size to a bassinet and has walls so that you won't roll on the baby while bedsharing.  I hadn't heard anything about this style being recalled but definately something to look into.

  • We bought one of those safe sleeper things for DS to sleep in, but unless you have a king size bed, it leaves very little room for you to sleep next to it. We just returned ours to Target tonight after using it once. Sad It also made breast feeding in bed difficult since there was no room for DS to lay next to me and there wasn't enough room for me to even sit up in bed with the boppy next to it (and I'm not a big person at all). Again, its a good idea - if you have the room.

We're just going to stick with making sure the sheets are tight, blankets are low, and pillows are high.

Agreed. Now that I see he turns to his side I'm even more nervous and sleep deprived. I only let him sleep on his tummy sometimes when i'm watching after a feeding. I've pulled out a blanket so DH and I each have one tonight. Hope that helps.

We just ordered ours from Walmart for $35 after seeing it on Amazon for over $70. LO won't sleep in her PNP either so we had rolled some receiving blankets really tightly and made a barrier for her that she couldn't roll out of and we wouldn't roll into and placed it in between our pillows. When she is swaddled she couldn't roll over and couldn't roll out of it. It's worked for us until we were able to get the snuggle nest in the mail.

The pictures I saw when I googled it had the walls, but also had the positioner on the inside of it. I was just wondering is all.

These are the only ones recalled and here's a link for you too..

  • Law sleeps on his side because it is the only way he will sleep longer than about 45 seconds. I just extend his lower arm out in front of him so he won't roll onto his front. Honestly if he moves at all, I'm so aware of him- it wakes me up. They way I see it is, it's much safer to just do what makes the best nights sleep for Lo because that ensures the best nights sleep for you. It's much more dangerous if you're completely exhausted because then you'll sleep much heavier and won't be as likely to react to him if he starts to move. Remember- not long ago Dr's were telling everyone to put their babies on their tummy's to sleep. At some point you do have to weigh risk v benefit and for us letting him sleep on his side wins.
