Two Under 2

Nursery Question...

Well it seems like we are having another girl.. have not had 20 week scan it is wednesday but at 17 weeks my OB guessed a girl. So My Dd is currently 14 months and her nursery all done. We are planning on keeping Baby #2 in our room for the first few months... So DD 1 will be in her current small room that is a nursery. then redoing another bigger room for DD 1.... My question is can I just give our second girl DD's crib set and buy DD1 a new toddler set. or will this already cause problems in the future...

Basically should I buy #2 her own set and just get one that kind of matches the walls already or can #1's

Re: Nursery Question...

  • We have 2 daughters as well. We bought a toddler bed for DD #1 and moved her into her new room just before baby was born. DD #2 is using the crib now. That seemed to work just fine for us.

  • We're in the same situation except we have boys.  We are planning on buying DS1 a new bedroom set (I'm skipping the toddler bed) and moving him out of the nursery into his "big boy" room.  I don't anticipate any problems as far as him being upset over losing his old room, I think he'll be excited for the new room.  The bigger question on my mind is the transition to a big boy bed.  Tongue Tied

  • I would wait and see. I had the same question, but since DD2 was going to be staying in my room (or could sleep in bassinet or pack n play) for awhile, I didn't feel it was a decision I needed to make right away.

As it turned out, DD1 was in no way ready for a toddler bed (still isn't), so we got DD2 her own crib. Worth every penny.

  • We are keeping DS in his crib until he's 10 - or as close to it as possible :) Seriously - it is great to have him contained until I am ready to get him. I'd forget about how your rooms look in terms of matching and keep #1 in her crib but move it to another room - and keep #2 in a pack-n-play as long as you can.....if you don't want to get another crib.
  • I have a dd and am pregnant with ds...we always planned on nursery furniture staying for the nursery.  I dont feel bad at all that the second child isnt getting new.

Well...Im not ready to take dd out of her crib so we bought bigger girl furniture in cream and will put dark nobs on the dresser and she will keep her coffee colored crib.  She is getting a new room though.

Ds is keeping the coffee colored nursery furniture, but we went to jcp and got him a different coffee colored crib to match the nursery furniture.  He is staying in the original nursery room which is painted neutral...he will get new curtains and a new wall decal.

Both cribs will convert into a toddler bed.  If that were not true I would have no problem giving second child the entire nursery set...think of it as dd1 has out grown it and eventually dd2 will out grow it as well and she will get something new.

  • I had this same question.  With DD#1 being 14 months, and new DS planning on staying in bassinet in our room for several months,  it really is a tricky thing deciding to go with a toddler or "real" bed or another crib.  After asking a lot of other mommies in my boat, we decided to go ahead and buy another convertible crib.

The advice that really stuck it in our heads was "Do you really want your toddler getting out of bed and walking around at night when you have a newborn to deal with?"

    Yeah. Scary. No thanks!!
