TTC After a Loss

Having a M/C increases your risk of a heart attack...

Last week's time listed that a woman's risk of a heart attack goes up by 40% for every m/c she has.  Just another thing to feel great about...  of course the magazine did not list any sources or any additional information.

  • I heard that, but I think they mean if you had something like blood clots that contributed to your loss, that may affect your heart later on in life.

That would be useful to know, and makes me feel better.  I wish the magazine had published more information.

I'm not 100% sure but that makes more sense, probably also because we may eat our feelings after a loss and may develop other health related issues that could cause a heart attack.

No, it would mean (assuming that this statistic has any validity to it at all) that your chance of having a heart attack has been increased by 80%.

So if you started out with, let's just say a 1% chance (totally pulling that number out of thin air, here), your risk would go up to 1.8%.

Statistics are dumb.  I haven't read the article in question, but shame on Time for publishing such a statistic without a source or any further information.

  • That is a scary stat, but I definitely agree with you ladies, there are other factors that contribute. Lifestyle being number one. I know that genetics unfortunately do play a role as well, but you can fight the battle with healthy eating and exercise, and trying to limit your reactions to stress. I got my degree in public health and had to also do a research class. If no resources are cited, that could be a sign that the article may not even be valid. I have to say that I did fall into this trap after my m/c. I was googling about how long it takes for the uterus to go back to normal and found a website that had a two fold mission, fertility and herb induced abortion. Right there that should have killed the credibility. I started reading it and as ridiculous as it sounded, I kept thinking, "oh no, what if the m/c was my fault." It had fruits, vegetables, and spices that 'supposedly' can cause damage to the unborn fetus. Then I went to the same site's fertility section; the exact same foods and herbs were mentioned. Even with my knowledge, I STILL kept doubting myself. Later, I analyzed my thinking and realized how incredibly ridiculous the article was. I guess all I am saying is all of us have to make sure what we are taking in is from credible sources! Unfortunately, there are dishonest people out there or people that just don't do their research writing some of these articles! I do a lot of researching curious topics on Web MD and they are usually pretty informative there. I need to definitely keep up on the current events, though. I am going to look around and see if I can find any other info on this topic. I hope you all are having a good night!

I just wanted to say that I totally agree with you there! I didn't see the article, but stats can definitely be inaccurate and especially if they didn't factor in all the variances. Kudos to you for pulling out the numbers. I took a stats class in college and absolutely despised it. Icky, icky stats. My teachers name was Mr. Bean, though, so I did get a kick out of that :)

  • I'm wondering if its tied into some of the potential causes of some m/c (clotting, etc).

My first thought when I read the subject line was that I wasn't surprised.  I mean, after a loss every.little.thing with a pregnancy would get your heart racing...not surprised some attacks could result.
