Swaddling and gas...

DD used to hate to be swaddled, but now loves it! Unfortunately, I feel as though she has a hard time releasing gas because she can't squirm and kick her legs. She will start to fuss after sleeping a bit, so I'll unwrap her and she will immediately fart.

Anyone else notice this? I'm thinking about waiting an hour or so after feedings before swaddling her...

Re: Swaddling and gas...

  • DD likes to be swaddled but I never tighten the blanket around her legs- I just never thought to do it.  so she can still kick around just fine.  It sometimes loosens the swaddle but oh well.  When she seems to be gassy in the swaddle and gets real squirmy, I rub her tummy and that seems to work well and then it doesn't ruin the swaddle.

  • Her legs shouldn't be so tightly swaddled; it can increase the risk of hip dysplasia. Try wrapping her arms/chest and leaving legs loose. (Added bonus: easier to do diaper changes w/o unswaddling.)

I didn't know this. Thanks! DH likes to swaddle tightly. I will let him know for future swaddling Smile

  • We use the Halo sleep sack for this reason.  She still gets the feel of the swaddle around her middle (we leave her arms free) and she can bend and kick her legs around to help release any gas.
