Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Does anyone else feel...

like they werent fully prepared, as a first time parent. I guess in my head I thought things would go in a certain way, and I thought I was going to be a certain type of parent, but boy o boy are things so completely different.  Its a learning experience, but on the financial side I just didnt know, I thought that ok we cut bills, save, do this do that and well be fine. Now that shes actually here Im seeing how much she needs, I love reading these boards because it really provides me information that I never thought to think about, first that she'll grow out of her infant carseat, never crossed my mind! I didnt realize she'd be able to use a high chair so quickly! And man does she grow super super fast!!! My sister is due in May, and im trying to tell her now, yes the baby clothes are cute but really all she needs are onies and a few outfits, SAVE your money, but items you NEED!!! I waited for my baby shower to see what gifts I would get before buying the larger items but ya didnt get one thing I needed, so now were looking at her change and realizing that ok in a few months she'll need this and this, and with a limited very limited budget its kinda scary. I know things would get better but im kinda at the stage were its ..... I wish someone would have told me...

: )

  • I read so many books, I think I was "over prepared", plus I have a girlfriend that has 2u2.  She is the woman I watched over and learned from the past 2 years.

As for the "stuff"...I buy most of my baby stuff second hand (with exception of the carseat).  You can find a lot of quality baby gear and stuff at consignment stores.  We also waited to have a baby until we were out of debt.  We follow Dave Ramsey and his books.  That man is GREAT at getting people out of debt.  Now our budget isn't as tight as it would have been.

  • I knew it would be expensive.  We buy a lot of our things second hand as well (her clothes, highchair, swing, PNP).  But diapers and formula adds up.  Luckily we make okay money so we aren't going broke.

  • Totally! I thought I was set with preparing ahead until family and friends were incredibly helpful in introducing me to new ways of doing things. I have put so much stuff on Ebay that I over-purchased.
  • I'm actually surprised at how cheap she has been.  We got a lot of our gear from showers so that was good, and I have about $350 in BRU gift cards from showers that we'll use for a second convertible car seat (we got one for our shower but I think I'll want them in both of our cars).  But other than that we spend about $25 a month on diapers and she is EBF which is free. So her monthly cost is no more than $35 with her drs visit copay. I guess solids will add a bit but with coupons and making my own it shouldn't be bad. I became a SAHM so our budget it pretty tight now and we are really being careful. And I agree with buying things second hand. I went into this not wanting a ton of stuff, so it's been nice to use what we were given and not worry about everything else. That being said, if I did it again I could buy even less and would know better how to deal with the carseat/stroller issue. Hindsight is 20/20 :-)

  • I really appreciate the feed back. And I think our biggest finacial problem is our debit. I have bought a few things out of a consignment shop and my DH about flipped. He know nothing about our finances, just that when he wants, not needs something he goes and gets it. Its very very frustrating, but well make it. I EBF also and I spent $17.50 on diapers last month so thats a plus, it will be ok!>!>!>! thanks again, and im going to look into the Dave Ramsey book.
  • Babies actually don't "need" a lot.  Especially if you BF.  Diapers, some clothes, a few rattles, some books, well and the car seats.  You don't need an exersacuer, jumperoo, etc. I would look into second hand shops, craigslist, can you ask family for the holidays?
