When is it best to pump?

I want to get the most out of my pumping sessions.  I get very little as is.  Is it best to pump right after a feeding or wait 30 min or an hour?

Re: When is it best to pump?

  • Im not sure about when as far as right after or waiting an hour..but I was told you will get your most in the early morning around 5am to 8am. It works best for me also.

  • I'm always nervous about taking DS's food by pumping, although  I only nurse one side and then pump on the other. I've been told that the evening and early morning are best. I was a little frustrated with my "output" and I tried eating oatmeal and drinking 2 glasses of water right before pumping and it helped me make more milk. GL!

  • Your prolactin levels (the hormone that makes BM) is highest between 1 am and 5 am.  I EP, and I pump at 1 and then when I get up in the morning.  I get the most in that first morning pump.  My levels are lowest during the day after that and they gradually increase as I head to 1 am.

However, DS doesn't latch well so I don't know as much about BFing and pumping.
