Who's Getting a Flu Shot?

Hi ladies.  One of the girls I work with is entering her second trimester.  She recently also got her flu shot, stating that her Dr. strongly pressed her to get it.  I've never had a flu shot before.  I won't be having my 8 week appointment until the first week in January, so I won't be able to ask my Dr. about this until then.  What are everyone's thoughts about getting a flu shot this season?

Re: Who's Getting a Flu Shot?

  • I got it this year for the first time because we were TTC and I was told it was a good idea to get it if you were pregnant or trying.

  • I got one. Pg women are recommended to get them. You don't want to get sick while pg b/c it can mess up your baby's development. Minor ex: friend of mine had a one-day fever when pg with first child; child has had lots of problems with some of her back teeth, and doctors/dentist think it's b/c teeth were forming when friend had that fever. Flu shot is $20 and not a big deal. Everyone in your household is advised to get one, too.
  • If you do, make sure you get one that is THIMEROSAL FREE! (aka Mercury). Your doc may tell you it only contains trace thimerosal, and really can't hurt you, but believe me, this kind of Mercury is MUCH stronger than the kind found in a can of tuna.  Check the CDC website for info on where to find one. You may have to call. www.cdc.gov

And remember never to get a vaccine for you or your child if either of you are feeling ill at the time of the shot.

  • I got one in Oct, but I get one every year because my asthma/allergy dr. suggests it.

  • If I am at all I'll wait until the second trimester. I've never gotten one before. DD just got one and was so sick afterwards. She had all of the symptoms of the flu because her body was fighting it but it wasn't the real flu. It was awful. And, at 8 weeks pregnant with DD I had a fever of 103 for over 4 days due to a kidney infection. DD is fine. Lots of people get sick while pregnant and their kids turn out normal.

  • My RE strongly recommended I get one especially since I work in a hospital.  He also strongly recommended I get the varicella vaccine as my pre iVF bloodwork showed zero immunity (crazy since I had the chickenpox pretty bad as a kid).

Could you talk to the nurse at your Dr.'s office before your 8 week appointment?

  • I will not be getting a flu shot.   I never have and I won't be this year either.

  • I'm not sure. I got one last year for the first time, and I didn't get the flu, although I hadn't had the flu for years even without the shot. I'm a little concerned about getting it during my first trimester, and by the time I'm 12 weeks, it'll be February and almost pointless to get one.

  • I got my flu shot this year before I was pregnant, but I got it last year while pregnant with DD. Being sick while pregnant is horrible and I never want to go through that again. I'm a big believer in getting the flu shot while expecting.
  • I got mine the month before we got our BFP. I think that it is worth it to stay healthy for your pregnancy, especially since it protects against H1N1 too.

  • I got mine in early November, before I conceived. I always get the flu shot though and have for years. DD has gotten the vaccine as well.
