Feeding schedule

I was curious how you gals do your newborn's feeding schedule...do you make sure to wake your child every few hours to feed them or do you let them wake up on their own? Do you feed them according to a schedule during the day and then let them wake up on their own at night? My pediatrician said to make sure to wake LO every few hours to feed. Is that what your dr recommended also? One last question--if you do use a schedule, when are you planning on letting them sleep until they wake up on their own?

TIA!

Re: Feeding schedule

  • I feed on demand. This can be every hour or every 3 hours. Paige will sometimes have one stretch of 4 hours at night. I only wake her up during the day if it's reaches the 3 hour point and she hasn't stirred on her own.

I'm of the kind where she will wake when she's hungry. Usually when she gives me a 4 hour stretch the feeding before was only 1-2 hours apart. So she kinda, "tops off" so she sleeps well. I don't mind it at all.

  • I feed her every 2.5-3 hours during the day. She usually wakes up on her own. At night, I wait for her to wake, and it's usually every 3-4 hours.

  • I feed on demand. My pediatrician recommended waking to feed the first 10 days and then moving to a feed on demand "schedule" even though it isn't scheduled per say.
  • I am feeding on demand. My dr. also recommending waking him every 2 hours but he does not appreciate being woke up when he is not tired. :-) I call him a drama queen. Right now he is eating every 3 hours which works for me!

  • I feed on demand although I have to be sure to feed him as often as possible so I don't let it go past 2 hours. He isn't gaining weight due to a weak suck so we're working on building supply and strengthening his suck. Before our visit with a lactation consultant, I was letting him sleep at night and having to wake him up in the morning. He was going 5 hours on his own. Now I'm doing every 3 hours at night.
