Betas?

So I see a lot of you writing about beta testing and I am clueless about this. Is it something my doctor will start doing at the first appointment (also when I have first u/s), or should I be contacting someone to get this done before the appointment (December 20th)?

I just don't want to be missing something that I should be doing!

Re: Betas?

  • Most women that are having betas have dealt with infertility or a loss. It is an early blood test. If you have not had any trouble conceiving it is not something you would need. HTH.

  • Most women do not get betas.  The only reason a doctor will perform a blood HCG test is if he/she still suspects pregnancy and it isn't showing up in a urine test (rare, but it does happen for some women) or if the pregnancy was the result of infertility treatments (IUI, IVF, etc.) or if the patient is high risk (or at possible risk for a miscarriage) and requires extra monitoring.  I'm sure there are a handful of other reasons too, but as far as I know these are the main ones.  You are unlikely to receive a beta otherwise.

  • I don't know about the majority of women here, but I'm only having betas done because I have had 2 miscarriages and was working with an RE for some infertility issues.

I was with a regular OBGYN for the first 2 pregnancies and they didn't run betas until I had spotting.  It's standard practice with an RE when you have treatment.

I think offices do things differently, but if you have no history of issues or any current problems then I wouldn't worry too much about betas.  Good luck to you!

  • Thanks, all!

  • I have to have a blood draw to confirm pregnancy before the OBGYN's office will even let me make my first appointment.  Hmm

You're not the first one who has mentioned this.  Isn't it funny how different offices work?  My OB typically schedules your first appt. with the nurse at 8 weeks (history, labs, informational pamphlets, etc.) and you see her at around 10 weeks if you have no history of problems.

I think that's how mine works too...she said after they get the results of the blood draw, they'll schedule the appointment.  You meet with a nurse to go over paperwork, history, and I think she said ultrasound!

I'm a little frustrated though...can't I just pee on a stick?  I hate needles.  Tongue Tied  I know they do a lot of labs when you're pregnant so I'll just have to get over it....

Aww poor Mrs. Stew.   I saw in another post you might go out today for your blood draw.  I plan on driving NOWHERE today with this stupid blizzard warning in effect.  My town does a terrible job of road maintenance.

I've become a human pincushion over the last few months, but I don't mind needles all that much either.  I mean, I don't LIKE them, but...  Just don't watch.  I think it hurts more if you watch, but then again I'm kind of a head-case.  Stick out tongue

It is funny how some have you verify pregnancy first and some just say, "Okay, let's schedule your first appt.!"

It's just raining here right now...it's supposed to turn into snow later in the day.  The only good part of going today is that DH could come with me...he can't on Monday.  I feel like a whiner for wanting him there!  Embarrassed

They really don't hurt that much...I've just had a phobia of them ever since I can remember.  I don't watch (I try not to even look at the needles when they come in with them), but I still get dizzy afterward.

Do you happen to be in MN? We're snowed in here. DH hung out at a friends house last night and now can't get home because some plows are coming off the roads. Boring day at home by myself. Boooo.... :(
