Babies: 6 - 9 Months

regarding the baby eating popcorn post

eh, I've heard of ton of people say that that they give their kids a fry or two here and there.  I've heard people give their kids icing or a piece of cake.

I'm sure it was just a couple so the baby can gum it.  I doubt the baby sat down with a whole bowl.

I hope you guys unclench by the time your kids are toddlers or you'll need glasses and migraine medicines for all of the side eyes you give.

Re: regarding the baby eating popcorn post

  • I am waaayyyyyy laid back about what I have/will feed the boys (seriously, B had almost anything) BUT I still dont let him have popcorn.  It is the only thing I have ever said no to.  It is very easy for them to aspirate parts of the kernals.  Call me uptight, I dont care.  To me french fries are not the same as popcorn

  • I wouldn't give my kid popcorn *at his current age of 6 months* because of potential choking, but we totally let him taste all different things (I mentioned this in that post as well) and they're not always healthy things.  I'm sure I'd get a lot of side-eye's from ladies on here, but as long as he eats his fruits and veggies, I don't see anything wrong with him tasting my lollipop or giving him a taste of what we're eating/drinking- he's just curious.

My aunt was one of those "my kids will NEVER eat McDonalds".....needless to say, now that they're teens they LOVE McD's.  I'm not saying it's because they were sheltered from the deliciousness of fastfood, but I definately think they were a tad jealous growing up when they weren't allowed to eat what other kids were allowed to have.

We plan to encourage DS to try all different foods- both healthy and not so healthy- and learn that we eat the unhealthy options in moderation.

I agree. DS choked on popcorn before and he's 3. I wouldn't give it to my infant.

  • I don't want them eating junk, but I know it will happen.  Oh well.

But, I see popcorn as more of a choking hazard at this point.

  • Dude, it was popcorn. A clear choking hazard. That's like me sitting DS down with a toy with tons of small parts.

I don't think the baby sat down with a bowl of popcorn.  I think he was given it to lick.

  • I choke on popcorn all the time. As a hard and fast rule, if I choke on it, I don't give it to LO. That also include Jolly Ranchers and shots of Jack Daniels.

  • I'm pretty laid back as well....my LO won't eat anything solid at all, so even last night I tried to give him a tiny taste of my salad I was eating (it was some cherry flavored whipped cream, and fwiw, I got the same "it's nasty mom!" reaction from him) but popcorn, like others have said, is a choking hazard.  One piece is a choking hazard.  One piece that someone is holding and the baby licks could easily end up in a baby's mouth if the adult slips, if the baby grabs at it, ect.

  • If he actually just licked it, then I'm not horrified. If they put it in his mouth, that was stupid. Its a choking hazard. Its not the same as a fry

This. I give DD things to try or let her lick. But I would never give her popcorn.

  • This is a ridiculous post, and I love you, yankee.  But being worried about sugar or bad nutrition is hardly the same as being worried about your baby choking on or inhaling popcorn.  There is no moderation argument when it comes to a clear safety hazard, imo.  There is absolutely no reason that you can't just refrain from giving your kid popcorn for a few years.

And anyone who gives a baby popcorn is a fwcking moron and a half.

  • Hmmm. I have a toddler, actually. I needed glasses and migraine meds for a couple of decades before she came along.

The junk food aspect of it doesn't bother me a bit. The choking hazard does.
