Breastfeeding

sore new mom...

I know everyone says BF should not hurt, but my nipples are extremely sore!  Any other new mom have sore nipples?  I use nipple cream and it helps, but there is still an uncomfortable feeling when I am in between feedings.  The LC's and nurses at the hospital said LO had a great latch, so I don't think that's an issue.  I told DH that my nipples would like a day off, but that's not even an option in my mind... Any suggestions?

Re: sore new mom...

  • A had a great latch from the first feeding. Sore doesn't even come close to describing it. I cried at every feeding for the first week. I think women who say breastfeeding shouldn't hurt are full of it. It hurts bad! But after the first week it got so much better. And at 3 weeks, there is no pain at all. Occasionally she will pull off of my nipple while still sucking at the same time and that hurts, but when she's behaving I can barely feel it :) Hang in there, it gets so much better!

  • I think there's some pain involved. Even if it was my finger getting sucked on that often I think it would be irritated - but it's a sensitive nipple! My LO had a great latch too - I got blisters because of his suction power though. Blisters. On the end of my nipple. Ouch.

I found that soothies placed in the fridge were awesome. Lanolin didn't seem to help me too much, so my LC got me APNO and it was amazing in helping with the pain (and protects against thrush!). It gets tons better, I can't even feel it anymore!

    Good luck mama!

  • it gets better over time! Soothies in the fridge, nipple cream or 100% olive oil, let them air dry as much as possible. After i got down feeding i would hand DS off to DH and just sit there for a few minutes with my nipples out. Also i found the lanolish tender nipple pads where the softest for me.

  • You are not alone! It is painful (IMO). The Lansinoh lanolin cream was really helpful, and so were organic cotton, reusable nursing pads. It look about 3-4 weeks for the soreness to subside. It took months before I could handle having the water in the shower hit them. Hang in there!

  • My LO also had a great latch from day 1, but that didn't stop me from getting sore and even cracked nipples for the first few weeks. The LC told me that he was doing great and I was doing great and that we just needed to let them heal and then we would be ok. After week 4 (and lots of Lanolin), we had no problem with BF. Now I barely even feel him!

  • thank you!!!!  i'm happy to know that i'm not alone in having this pain.  actually the warm water during a shower felt really good!  i really appreciate your comments!  :0)
  • I wanted to quit days 5-14 it was so painful, my nips were cracked and bleeding. My son also had jaundice on day 5 and I had to pump for a day straight so that actually helped them heal up a bit. I also used soothies as well as shells (they help them air out and heal) and lots of lanolin.

It will get better, by week 3 I was totally fine.

  • Hang in there!  Even with a good latch, it's normal for your nipples to take a few weeks to get used to BFing.  I found the Medela breast shells (NOT shields) to relieve some of the pain for me.  I wore them between feedings on days I was particularly sore.  I got them at BRU for ~$15.
  • I'm going o purchase the shells today!  Hoping by all the reviews I found, that my pain will be much less with using these!  thank you for the suggestion.
