How did you stop pumping?

I have to go on some meds and OB told me that it does get into BM. I'm going to be on it a while so I decided that now is the time to stop BFing altogether. Any ideas?

Re: How did you stop pumping?

  • I've been working on stopping pumping at work for a while now. I'm not stopping altogether but maybe this will help anyway. I had been pumping for long enough to get two full bottles (one on each side). 2 weeks ago I started pumping for less time, so only half a bottle on each side. The first few days I got very skim milk but my body adjusted and now it's normal milk. At this point I feel like I could drop it and not leak or anything because I don't feel engorged even if I'm late to pump. I'm still nursing at home though, and intend to for a while.

  • I cut down to one session for a week and then stopped altogether. It worked for me but I only pumped at work and my schedule was making it hard to pump what DS needed. I continued to nurse at home until DS decided he'd prefer the bottle about 2 weeks ago so those 2 nursings were cut as well. Now I just nurse for night wakings and in the morning. I have not had any discomfort.

  • Right now I'm only pumping first thing in the morning and right before I go to bed. I'm going to start cutting my pumping time in half, and then go down to one session a day, and then drop that.

I read online that if you put cabbage leaves in your bra it will help dry up milk, but you shouldn't use it if you are allergic to sulfa. I'm glad I read that, because I break out in hives when I've had sulfa medication.

  • I don't know how much time you have, but when I stopped bf'ing I cut out a session, and then about 5 days later I cut out another session, and down like that until we were done.

I have heard the same thing about cabbage leaves and I've also heard that cold meds help dry up as well.  I was uncomfortable for about 2-3 days when I stopped, but I had been nursing first and last feeding and then dropped those at the same time.

  • I did it over the course of a month.  I would drop one pumping session a week until I was down to one.  Then I just stopped.  I had no pain.
