Cloth Diapering

cloth diapering = no onesies?

Hey, All,

It's me again, hopping over from the April 2011 board with a CD question.

One of my friends who I would pretty much consider a "baby expert"--mom of four, midwife, doula, etc. gave me a bunch of cloth diapering supplies and told me, "If you cloth diaper, don't buy onesies because the onesies will wick the moisture out of the cloth diapers and make them leak." She told me instead to get my baby T-shirts and legwarmers. Has anyone else heard this? I mean, I believe her, but I guess I'm always surprised when I hear something I've never heard before.

Thanks so much!

  • DS is always in onesies and we never have leaks because of wicking.  If we have a leak it leaks out the sides because of compression.  I put him in babylegs too.

  • Nope. You can use onesies with CDs with no issues. The only time you could possibly have an issue is with a very wet diaper and a onesie that is too snug, but at that point you would probably be having the same issue if it were a sposie. FWIW, I put DD in onesies all the time and we've never had this issue.

    Do you ever sleep? :)

  • Compression is a potential issue for wool covers but if you are getting waterproof PUL or TPU covers, it isn't an issue.
  • DS wears onsies most days and we NEVER have leaks.  He wears babylegs and shirts when we are home and I want to make life a little easier with changing, not because of leaks.  Maybe she was using diapers that didn't fit her child's body well or had the wrong size.  What kind of diapers are they?

  • What? DD practically lives in onesies. I don't use pants much, but that's because I'm lazy and prefer being able to check her diaper easily.

The only time I have wicking issues with the onesies is if I let her go too long in a diaper.

  • DD wears onesies all the time. The only issue we've had is that some of them are a little short and don't fit well over the cloth diapers. Just get something stretchy or long and you'll be fine.
  • All CDing Moms I know use onesies.
  • I also use onsies all the time with DS and never have any issues with wicking. It is a PITA if they dont fit over the diaper but just buy a size up and they will work just fine.

  • I prefer onesies and other snappables to t shirts because babies spend so much time on their backs that the t-shirts inevitably ride up and make their backs and tummies cold. In teh summer, I suppose t-shirts make sense.

But my baby has been cloth diapered since her stump fell off around day 5, I love me some onesies, and the only time she ever leaked was one unfortunate tummy time when she was wearing a t-shirt.

In fact, one of my favorite things about CDs is when you snap the onesie on the baby over their fluffy butt, it makes them look a little like a bowling pin.

  • We need onesies to prevent him from ripping the diaper off himself.

  • DD wears onsies everyday. No problems. The only time she needs t-shirts is when she is in her wool.

  • Your friend is high. DD wears onesies with CDs all the time.
  • Well I have had problems with onesies not fitting well by the time the pants are the right length the onesie is to small in the outfit.  When the onesies got to small it would wic onto the onesie or the pants.  It became less of a problem as he grew but maybe DS just has short legs?

Told IVF is the only option and have not found a clinic that will take me.

  • I have had this happen a couple times, but only if the diaper is REALLY saturated.

Once your baby is rolling/mobile, I can't imagine not using onesies... t-shirts would be riding up all the time.

You can buy onsie extenders to make them longer.

  • I just looked at the bag of what she gave me. It is a bunch of Bumkins and a few Polar Babies diaper covers.

Thanks for all of your help!
