Parenting after 35

Intro + question to those with 2 LO's or more

Hi everyone, I am sorry I didn't formally introduce myself earlier. Name's Anna, and I come from Pregnant>35 forum. I am originally from Russia, so forgive me for my far from perfect English. I have a college junior and two LO's, and I work full-time. My 3 y.o. recently came down with first a virus and then (possibly bacterial) pneumonia (he is feeling better now). The question is, how did you manage to separate your newborn from the sick older sibling? My son is crazy active even when sick, constantly running into the baby's room, touching her and her things, coughing and sneezing at her. Looks like the baby is ok this time, but I was really stressed out, and this is just the beginning  of the winter season. I am even thinking of pulling him out of day care for now, so he doesn't get sick as often. Thanks!

Re: Intro + question to those with 2 LO's or more

  • Sadly, I have yet to figure out a way to keep them separated. We do try to make sure she doesn't kiss or hold on to her brother when she is sick....but it is very hard. We have been lucky where she really has only been sick twice since I had my son. Once was a 24 hr stomach bug and the other was a cold that went through the whole house.

  • Just saying welcome!!!  I can't give any advice re: keeping your LO's separated, however.

  • I just wanted to stop by and say hi and welcome!  You will love this board.

I don't have two little ones, so I don't have any ideas on this - sorry.

  • Welcome and congrats!

My only thought is to do everything you can to keep the 3 year old out of the baby's room, and keep the baby in his/her room, for the most part.   Keep them separated until the bug passes.

  • Welcome!  I think you just do the best you can to keep them separated and little hands clean. There is only so much you can do when you have more the one LO. My LO has had Strep 4 times now which I have been told is rare for infants but she has older siblings that bring it to her.   GL!

  • I do remember you from the Pregnant over 35 board, and I can say I had no idea that English was not your first language, it always seemed perfect!  My LOs share a room, so it is impossible for them not to share things.  But you are doing the right things by keeping them apart, discouraging sick  LO from touching baby, and just trying to keep things clean.  It is your decision to pull your LO from daycare, maybe try an in home daycare?

  • Welcome!  Unfortunately, it was nearly impossible to separate them unless DH and I tag teamed in different parts of the house.   Like sick kid in the basement and well kid upstairs.  I did a lot of handwashing, mainly with me, and used a lot of Clorox Anywhere spray.  Beyond that, not much you can do.  Remember the newborn still likely has your immune system boost so it is around 6 wks to 2 mos that I remember seeing the first cold appear.

  • we just did our best - we have a small house- so it's not like we could be in different parts really.

griffin got sick in oct last year- they were only 4mo old... i kept them on one couch- griffin on the other - and covered myself with burp cloths when i picked them up so they weren't on my clothing... they never got DS1's stomach bug - so that worked.

when he would come home from daycare we'd change his clothes and wipe him down with antibacterial wipes- but even doing that- one of my twins got pretty sick at 3mo old - fever that wouldn't go away - turned into meningitis (viral, thankfully).... there's only so much you can do.

i would not take him out of daycare - it's so good for them to stay with their routine- and then you can give the baby the time you gave your odler children when they were babies.  We kept Griffin in daycare full time while i was on maternity leave and i will never regret that - he loved it- so much more fun for him there than with me at home with the babies.
