I had contractions before my water broke. In fact. I was contracting Friday afternoon and went to the hospital Friday evening. I was at 4cm. By 6am Saturday I was at 6cm and my water still didn't break. At 7am my doctor came in and I was at 9cm and he broke my water for me. by 8:13am Paige was born.

My doctor broke my water when I was at 9cm. She thinks I had a pin hole size puncture in it, as I had a slow trickle (I thought it was just regular discharge) for the day leading up to labor.
Contractions started for me about 5 hours before my water broke. I did lose my mucus plug though in the morning and then contractions started about 8 hours later.
When my water broke, I was 0cm dilated and 0% effaced. I made absolutely no progress until they started me on Oxytocin about 8 hours later. Only 4 hours after starting the IV, it was time to push.
ETA: I didn't answer the actual question, whoops! I was having teeny tiny regular contractions about 4 hours after my water broke, but I couldn't feel them at ALL. They weren't productive or strong enough to feel until the Oxytocin.
With DD my contractions started before my water broke BUT they were so unnoticeable and irregular (I only know I was having them because I was having a lot of pelvic pain and we went to L&D and they monitored me, saw the contrax, and sent me home 2 hours later "in early labor"--my water broke 22 hours after that). Even after my water broke with her I didn't get into active labor--I wound up needing Pitocin to get things moving.
This time around contractions came well before my water breaking--my OB had to break my water at 9cm.
Mom to J (10), L (4), and baby #3 arriving in July of 2015
My water broke at 5am and I didn't feel contractions until after 1am. I didn't go to the hospital until it had been 18 hours after it broke. My OB knew I wanted to avoid as many interventions as possible.
My water broke (huge gush not just a trickle) and strong contractions came immediately. I was fingertip dilated on Tuesday. My water broke at 5:00PM on Thursday and we went straight to the hospital. By 5:30PM I was 4cm and in active labor. I did not require pit at all.
i think it totally varies.. but i started getting contractions at 3pm, lost mucus plug at 4pm, water broke at 5pm, and i had my baby at 8am the following morning. however, my water was like a slow trickle at 5pm.. the nurse at the hospital fully broke it (i think) when she did an internal on me at 3am, cause suddenly my contractions went from 0-60 in like 2.2 seconds. (and then i dilated the full 10cm in 2 hours, but that's a whole other story.)
I contracted for over 24 hours w/o my water breaking. My OB had to break my water to get things moving along and I am really glad that they were the ones to do it, since there was muconium in my water and I think I would have freaked since it was greenish.
This! I'm so glad someone else said that they had contractions for over 24 freakin' hours. I had the same thing and they were REAL and perfectly timeable at about 5 minutes apart for the last like 8 hours before I went to L&D. Everyone asked me why I got an epidural at only 3cm dilated like I was some kind of a wuss. Pfft, those things sucked. </rant>
Re: moms with outside babies, how long did it take to
