Postpartum Depression

change therapists?

I recently started seeing a therapist. After my assessment it was concluded I've got major depression from post partum. So during my session my therapist says. I sounded really immature & needed to grow up. really? that's what you tell a depressed person? I also left w/ no medication & my next appt isn't until jan. Should I change therapists for her comment? the last thing i need right now is to be lectured. Its a task to get thru each day let alone a brow beating. Do you really have to have meds to cope & make it thru?

Re: change therapists?

  • Wow! I can't believe she would say such a thing! I would look into a new therapist. As far as meds go, according to some therapists, meds are not neccessary...in some cases.

Mine had me do extensive blood work to rule out medical... for thyroid, they normally just to the TSH but I requested they also look at T3 and T4. All came back normal...and I'm still depressed. I will probably start meds next week and also I was referred to a specialist to check hormones.

I am sorry that happened to you :( DH gets at me like that from time to time...we definitely don't need that added stress.

  • i would totally change therapist. they should never put you down. they should help you, not make you feel worse.
  • Definitely change therapists. Mine isn't nearly so obvious as that but I quit going all the same.

The two therapists I have had both worked in conjunction with a psychologist so they decided together that yes I should be on medication. I do not believe most therapists have the ability to write prescriptions but some do. This therapist could also be on that wants to wait things out and see if therapy is enough to help your depression.

Regardless, just based on that comment I would definitely change therapist. Good Luck. Not all therapists will give you a brow beating.

  • Change therapists.

My therapist is very come-to-Jesus & doesn't hold back, but I have NEVER felt belittled or judged by her.  She's very frank when I'm complaining about something that is normal for motherhood, but that's  her job - to help me sort through the normal versus the PPD.

  • wow, I'm sorry you had that experience...I think they can give perspective more than sympathy at times, but they shouldn't insult you and make you feel worse...find a relationship that works for you.

  • Were you seeing  a therapist or psychiatrist? Unless the therapist is an MD then they cannot provide meds.  Either way- for a first meeting it doesn't seem like the therapist is warm, or supportive in any way with that sort of commentary. Some times peolpe need to hear those sorts of things but ONLY when they have an ongoing relationship w/ therapist.

You do not ALWAYS need meds.  You can start processing what is happening and bring up your concerns/wants for RX but they go hand in hand most times. Sorry you had a crappy experience. Good luck to you.
