2nd Trimester

Anyone who has a c Section before?

I just found out that I may have to have a c section.  My first child was no drugs and V DLV.  I am scared about the idea of a c section, mainly becuase of the epidural.  Does the epidural hurt?  Also how fast did you get over the c section?  Any other details about it would be great! I would just like to know all I can so I can be ready.  Thanks!!!

Re: Anyone who has a c Section before?

  • I have had two c-sections and this one will be my third.  Every time I am always nervous.  The epidural is less painful than contractions (more like  bee stings) of any kind, it's pretty fast and mostly pressure.  Of course a c-section takes longer to heal from but if you follow the doctors orders and make sure to drink lots of fluids and move around (take short hallways walks ect.) you'll do fine and recovery will be shortened.  With my second one I was up and moving in no time and didn't require any pain medications once I went home.  Chin up!!

  • Epidural insertion should not really be painful.  They numb you with local anesthetic and that stings a bit.  Then the epidural insertion itself is a bit uncomfortable but really not painful.  And it's nothing compared to the pain of contractions.

C-sections can be uncomfortable too because you may feel pressure and tugging during the surgery, and some people get nauseous from it.  But c-sections are not that bad and scheduled ones are usually a lot easier.

My recovery was really easy.  I was on pain meds (Percocet and Motrin) for 5 days and then I was fine.  As long as I kept up on my meds, I never felt pain, just tired.

Make sure you take your stool softeners after the birth!!!  You will be just fine :)

  • Like pp said--the epi feels more like bee stings--but it's fast and then you are numb from the chest down....weirdest feeling but doesn't hurt at all.  You feel tugging and pushing to get the baby out--the scars they make nowadays are so small you wonder how the H they got the baby out!  It's amazing.

I was very sore for the first week-2 weeks---but it goes fast and as long as you move around sensibly you will be fine.  Biggest thing with having a toddler is to make sure you get some care b/c we all know how high maintenance they can be.  That's my only worry about a repeat c/s---the c/s itself I'm not overly worried about.

  • I had a csection w/ DD. first off if you had a Vag delivery pain free already an epidural is NOTHING at all pain wise, I was down for about 2 weeks before I went anywhere, my OB is awsome I dont even have a scar, just make sure NOT to lift anything over baby's weight for about 8 weeks, and your hospital stay will be longer. The worst part to me was having the catheter pulled out.

  • I ended up having an unplanned c-section after 18 hours of labor because of complications.  I got an epidural after 12 hours because the contractions starting getting to painful.  The thought of it absolutely terrified me but it was seriously no big deal.  It only takes a second and after it was over I was like "That was it?".  You feel a tiny pinch when it's inserted but it didn't hurt at all.  Contractions are waaaaaaaaaay worse.

In regards to the actual c-section.  It was a easy peasy.  I didn't feel any pain at all.  Occasionally I would feel a bit of pressure or tugging/pulling but it just felt a little weird, no pain.  The worse part was when they were putting me back together and they had to massage my uterus, the nurse told me that it might make nauseas and to let her know if I'm going to throw up.  Not even 2 seconds later I started throwing up.  After they were done, I went into recovery for about an hour.

My recovery was pretty easy.  I was able to start walking the next day.  I was sore for a while but they gave me some pain meds which I had to take for a few weeks.  They also gave me a stomach brace which I wore for about a month and it helped a lot.  It wasn't nearly as bad as I though it would be.

It's important to remember that even though you may feel fine, DO NOT try and do too much because you will pay for it later.  I learned that the hard way.  Take it easy and get as much rest as you can.

  • The epi wasn't bad at all.  I had a planned c/s because DD was transverse and I was very nervous about the epi.  It didn't hurt at all.  The recovery was easy.  I was in the hospital about 36 hrs and was on Percocet at home the day after that.  The next 2 or 3 days I took Tylenol 3, but mainly because I had to have a bikini cut and a classic cut (because I had 2 large fibroids) so I had to have staples and the staples pulled a little.  I did find it easier to sleep reclining, but that could be from the higher incision.  The only thing I'm nervous about on the next c/s is trying to explain to a toddler why Mommy can't pick her up.
  • I had a c-section with my first. The only  part of the epidural that hurt IMO was it being placed in your back. After that I could feel it there, but nothing too bad. I healed pretty fast. My doctor was surprised at how well my scar looked at my 2 week appointment. I was up and moving mostly normal in no time.

  • My water broke at 36 weeks and I was in labor for 24 hrs and never progressed past 1cm.  So I ended up with a C-section.  The epidural was more scary than painful.  Mostly what I remember about that is shaking uncontrollably after they gave it to me, but they said that was a normal side effect.

The C-section wasn't great, but in retrospect it wasn't that bad either.  I would say the worst of the pain was the first week, but you get some great pain meds, so take those.  By the end of the 2nd week I was able to move around pretty decently but I still had tugging and pulling sensations around my incision for weeks and months...not painful, just noticeable.  I would say it took about 5-6 weeks for all the uncomfortableness to go away.

Just make sure you line up someone to help you those first two weeks.  Getting up and down stairs will be difficult so if you need to move the nursery onto one floor of the house then do that. Oh and you aren't allowed to drive anywhere for 6 weeks.  So keep that in mind.
