Indiana Babies

Another nursery question...

About the room: It's currently our office. It has gorgeous deep walnut crown molding and a chair rail that I painstakingly stained. I planned the nursery to coordinate with the walnut color.

And the backstory: I was planning on painting the nursery today. I was going to do aqua on the bottom and cream on the top. I have the day off from work, so I have 10 hours of Paige-free time to just get it done. So, last night, I ask DH to put up painter's tape (I hate doing it). He's always up late, so I go to bed figuring it'll be done when I wake up.

OMG. I wake up and not only is the painter's tape not up, but the baseboards are gone, as is the CARPET. Indifferent

WTF?

DH is like, "oh, I wanted to check out the hardwood floors underneath. I think we should have them refinished."

Granted, they are gorgeous and have never been touched, but it'd be the only room in our house with hardwood floors. And it's a bedroom. Dumb.

Plus, my one-day project will have now turned into a 3-month project. I effing hate when DH does this crap. And it pretty much happens with every simple project I want to do.

Oh, and we're supposed to be hosting Christmas at our house. It's sort-of the reason why I have my panties in a wad to get the room done.

But then he threw out the idea of doing wainscoting... which would mean we'd be getting rid of my chair rail, but I'm sort-of ok with it if it means wainscoting. Because I love wainscoting, love how it looks in a nursery and I've always wanted to do it in that room.

Anyway. The fabric that I'm using has a cream/beige base to it - it's really obvious in person.

So, white wainscoting wouldn't look good with it.

Would it be dumb to do wainscoting in a cream/light beige color? The top of the room would be aqua, so I know it'd look better with white, but I really want to plan the room around this fabric.

Plus, the crib/changing table are a dark wood. I think if I went with a cream/light beige wainscoting, it might help tie it in a little better.

Here's the style of wainscoting I'm thinking about:

Or, do I say screw it and do white wainscoting, keep my dark furniture, and hope that no one notices the white-cream difference?

Or do I say screw the whole thing and just paint it today, leaving the chair rail as it is?

Thoughts please. :-)

Re: Another nursery question...

  • I'm going to be of no help to you because for the life of me I can never visualize what something will look like.

But WTF was he thinking? ::slaps Larry upside the head::

  • That's tough because I love wainscoting as well!  I don't think the dark furniture would look bad with the white wainscoting.

I also think the fabric you have chosen will look just fine with white wainscoting as long as you can pull in other color into the room to make the fabric 'pop.'

If you're feeling really ambitious you could make some of these floor cushions with the fabric which would be fun:

If you do decide to keep the wood floors (p.s. I'd be so ticked if I woke up to this mess) these cushions will help soften/warm-up the room!

  • I really love that fabric and I think the hardwood floors in the nursery sound beautiful.  I think white and cream are fine together.  You could also paint the wainscoting cream unless it's connecting to trim in the hallway or something.

I was really concerned with it in T's room, but I think it turned out okay.  All trim in our house is cream, not bright white, so I was looking for cream bedding and furniture.  Well, I found a white bookcase, have white bedding and a cream side table.  I think it all blends fine together.  I can show you pics if you want to see them.

  • OMG, I would have killed him!

I think that cream & white would be just fine together.  What are you using the fabric for?  A bed skirt, right?

PS - I'm absolutely in *love* with that fabric.  I can't wait to see it all together!

Yup, I'm using the fabric for a crib skirt.

Thanks for all your input everyone. I think you're all right about the white/cream not being an issue... especially if I keep the dark wood furniture (it might not look as nice if the cream was against a white crib).

And yeah, when I woke up this morning, DH was in the shower, so I went and looked in the room. I simultaneously wanted to throw up, cry, fall on the floor, and go punch him. I mean, seriously. If you have an idea, wake me up and tell me about it - don't rip the entire room apart and then float it by me.

The only reason his balls are still intact is because I've always wanted to do wainscoting in that room. :-)

  • I think the white wainscotting would look fab! Especially with hardwood flooring. Yum. Since white and cream are both neutrals and since the fabric isn't going to be everywhere in the room, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

And, yeah, I'd be sooo pissed if Abe did something like ripping an entire room apart without consulting me. Obviously, Larry meant well but why on Earth wouldn't he have a chat with you about it prior to diving in? Silly silly. At least you won't have to worry about getting paint on the carpets, right? :)
  • I actually really like white/ivory together - I think it blends nicely, so I'd just do white and keep the dark furniture.

FWIW, at our wedding my dress was ivory/diamond white and we used a lot of white and ivory for the table linens and chair covers.  I loved the way it all went together.

Also, our family room has dark leather furniture, tan walls and white trim and I'm planning on adding a bunch of ivory pillows and an ivory throw.  (obviously I want to spend my time in a state of rage at my children and dogs by adding ivory accessories, lol)
