VBAC

How long did you stay?

In the hospital after your section? I delivered DD at 12:40 am on a Thursday, and went home on Saturday afternoon. So from delivery to leaving, it was less than 48 hours.

I keep reading of people staying 5 days. Is this normal? With an uneventful section I mean. I know when you have complications it would be longer.

If I have to have one again, I am dang well not staying 5 days!!!

Re: How long did you stay?

  • I don't think that's quite normal.  Sounds closer to a vaginal delivery stay.  I delivered at 7:43 am on Monday and left around 11:30 either on Thursday or Friday (I can't for the life of me remember - I had no sleep the Sat. or Sun. before deliver and stayed on pain killers the entire time in the hospital - I'd ask Dh but he's still sleeping).  They were going to let us go a day early if I was cleared by my doctor, but DD had jaundice and I figured we should just stick it out.

  • I delivered at 5:37 pm on a Wed. and went home on Sat morning.  48 hours for a CS is very short.  I have never heard of that.  After my VBAC I only stayed 24 hours.

  • It was 4 or 5 nights for both my c/s.  I never brought up leaving early b/c although I couldn't wait to get home I was enjoying not worrying about anything and being required to rest and relax. At home, I would've been trying to do too much.
  • Note- they wanted to keep me til Sunday, but allowed me to go Saturday since I was recovering well.

  • I think it was 3 nights.  She was born the evening of the 13th and I think I went home in the morning on the 16th.  Usually they would have kept me another day but my OB said I was fine to leave a day early.

Looking back I kind of wish I had taken advantage of all the help at the hospital for another day.  I didn't appreciate how nice it was to have people bring you food and take the baby so you could rest until I got home and it was just my husband and me, both totally sleep deprived.

  • Had DS at 10:26 a.m. on Saturday and left Monday before noon.  That's less than 48 hours, right (oy, morning math)?  The doc said I could stay an extra day if I wanted (b/c ILs were staying at our house and she said she'd tell DH that if I wanted), but I checked out OK and she said people usually heal faster at home.

  • I was thinking about it last night - I *believe* that we stayed a total of 2 nights.  I was there starting Friday morning and got out Monday afternoon.  It's bad, but the hospital stay is kind of a blur.

ETA: I mean 3 nights - 2 nights after the delivery day. The Friday - Monday thing is still correct.

  • I had the c-section at 6:05 am on a Thursday and left Saturday afternoon. I could have stayed until Sunday, but I was healing well and ready to go home.

  • Mine was not normal and I was in the hospital 6 days. I was there from Friday around 9pm until Thursday around 3pm. My hospital had a 4 day policy for c/s, the 5th day was because of HELLP/pre-e, and the 6th was because my BP wouldn't regulate so they put me on meds before letting me go home.

  • my c/s was at 7:30 Wed am and I went home Saturday around 5pm I think.  They told me I could have gone home Friday, but DS had to stay another night so we decided to wait on my discharge too.

  • 48 hours, but DS was born on 12/23 so I was determined to get home.
  • My c/s was at 3:38 Tues morning. I was healing well enough that they would have let me leave Fri morning, but DS was in the NICU, so they let me stay an extra day. DS was still in, so I stayed in the parent room in the NICU until he was released Monday night.

  • I delivered at 10:09 on Monday morning and went home around 4pm on Thursday. They actually wanted us to stay another day, but we were both doing well and I wanted to sleep in my own bed on Thanksgiving (the day we went home). I was a mess at 48 hours, I could not have gone home at that point.
  • Too long!  DS was born (after 22 hours of labor + c/s) at 11:19 P.M. on a Monday.  We left around noon on Friday.  My recovery was pretty rough though -- terrible nausea and headache; didn't even get out of bed until Wednesday afternoon.  We were hoping to go home Thursday but the doctors didn't think I was ready... and they were right.

If I end up with a repeat c/s, I think (or at least hope) I will have an easier recovery since I may not be in labor for almost 24 hours beforehand.  And I will certainly insist on getting up out of bed earlier.  I wasn't happy with having to stay in bed at all and I think it made my recovery that much harder.

  • I think I would have been released after 48 hrs (DS was born on a Tuesday morning, and release would have been Thursday sometime), but I had a fever after the surgery, and they also gave me antibiotics when my incisions started looking inflamed, so I wasn't released until Friday bc of observation. Granted, DS was in the hospital with a week-long stint of antibiotics, so I didn't actually *leave* the fricking hospital for a week - aaaaugh. I'm pretty sure my MIL had like 7 or 10-day long stays for her c-sections (late 70s).

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • Went in Tuesday morning and left Friday Morning.  Totally uneventful planned section.  My recovery went really well but if I had gone through labor I doubt I would've been able to go home so soon.
