Cloth Diapering

If you have a sewing machine, come in please.

I know this isn't CD related, but I've noticed quite a few ladies on this board have a sewing machine.  If you have one, what brand & style do you have?  How do you feel about it?  What types of projects do you use it for?  Any other words of wisdom?  My mom is getting me one for Christmas & I'm excited about it.

  • I have this one and love it. It came with a bunch of different feet and does about 60 different stitches.  I've done all sorts of projects with it, from simple to not so simple! It's great for beginners too, easy to use, but powerful at the same time.  The only negative thing I can say about it that it's tough to do super thick things with, but it does my quilts just fine with the walking foot.

  • I have a mid 70s Brother Pacesetter.  It's a step up from a basic machine, but it's used and is missing part of a cog and so drops a zag every 2-3 inches.  I only paid $100 for it, so that isn't a big concern to me.

I've been really hard on it and haven't had a single problem.  I bought it from a reliable sewing machine repair store that sells used machines and had a good experience.

I did do some shopping for a new machine with a Pfaff and a Viking Dealer and decided I could do without the classes and the warranty especially since I didn't know how much I would use it.  When I buy my next machine, I'll most likely be buying a new machine from a local dealer.

  • I have a Kenmore. I bought it cheap from a friend who was upgrading to a better one. It's not super fancy, but it gets the job done!

I've used it for all sorts of diapering stuff... soakers/shorties/longies (fleece and wool), covers (fleece, wool, PUL), diapers (pockets, fitteds, prefolds), wetbags, wipes, elastic replacement, etc.

And also... pajamas, reusable produce bags, Halloween costumes, sleep sacks, soft soled shoes, tutus, etc.

I just started a blog where I'm posting about what I'm working on: https://rookiesewer.blogspot.com

  • I have a Janome 1860 and I love it.  I just replaced my old machine over the summer and this thing sews like a dream.  I make costumes, alter clothing, quilt, and make cloth inserts with it.  This past summer I made a wedding a dress!

IMO you can't go wrong with a Janome, Bernina, Pfaff or Viking.  I have a Viking serger and would have loved a viking sewing machine, but they are pricey.  The Janome was a great deal for what you get.

agree-janome.  there's 100+ who belong to a quilt club i go to...and most have a janome.  quality and versatility.  it's top notch.

  • I have an Elna Carina 65 from the early 80's. It was worth over 1K new- my Grandma used it for her sewing business. It was handed down to me in high school and it's still running great a decade later.

My mother is buying me a new machine when we move. I think we're going with the Bernina 350PE.

  • I have a Singer Brilliance that I LOVE.  I'm a huge Singer fan.  It has like 80 different stitches, and is just super awesome.  I've done projects for C, clothing alterations, blankets, etc.

  • I have a Singer Simple, one of the cheapest options Singer has to offer.  I use it to make basic curtains, duvet covers, hem things.  Nothing fancy but it does the job.
  • I have a Singer that my MIL got me 2 Christmases ago.  It's this one:

I am a sewer(mostly clothes/bags), and I used to use a super heavy old one from 1954 till I got this!  I used to not like newer machines, cause they seemed fragile and shaky.  This one is great, and the instruction book is very clear as well.  It's small, and I usually like mine to be set into a table, but having this out of a table hasn't bothered me at all.  I don't think it could get through layers of denim or leather, but I don't use those materials often anyhow.  Also, this has 66 stitches, which is fun...but I pretty much never use 90% of them.  Enjoy your new machine!!

  • I have a Husquavarna Viking Freesia that my mom bought me 10 years ago for my 21st birthday. She's a home-ec teacher, and is a pretty big believer that the #1 reason people get frustrated with sewing is they buy a POS cheap machine that breaks on them. So she got me a higher end machine than I could have bought myself. It doesn't have the embroidery settings, but is a quality, solid machine and has given me no issues since I got it.

Over the years my machine has made clothes, quilts, my wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, curtains, diaper covers, diaper inserts, etc. I am more of a craft sewer, but so far it has powered through everything I've thrown at it.

  • My sis got me a Singer about 7 years ago for xmas.  I'm not sure how she snagged it, but it's a school model that she got on a sale.  It doesn't have a trillion stitches, but I've never wished there was something it could do that it can't.  I sew clothes, blankets, curtains, etc.  I guess the only thing I never do is embroidery with my machine and quilting, which I'm just not into.

If it were me, I would buy a basic sewing machine and a serger.

  • I have a base model Singer from Walmart that retails for around $100.  I hate it.  When I first got it, it leaked black oil all over a white quilt I was making.  This went on for months.

It also has tension issues.  It  loses tension and lots of thread will bunch up under the stitches on the underside of the garment I'm sewing.  It's really frustrating.  Now I know I have to constantly check to make sure it's tight.

I've heard good things about Brother machines.  Hoping to find one under the tree this year :)
